Okay, maybe I am being really dense, but I have just come back from a trip to New England (had an amazing time) and I am confused by signs I kept seeing.

As I was driving around every so often there would be a sign saying "caution: Low salt area", especially around the Cape Cod area.

What does this mean and why?!?!

Please excuse my English ignorance and thank you!

highway depts in the USA use rock salt to melt ice on road ways in winter. the low salt areas are places were the amount of salt is being restricted to protect surface water supplies from salt run off. its a warning to drivers that the road may be icier that sourding roads. hope that helps.
