I understand that it is possible to automatically put the serial numbers i.e. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and so on in each and every row in the table.

Could you tell me the procedure for doing so as it will save a great deal of time?

Do I understand you to mean you want to number the rows?

Insert or allow for a column where you want the row number to appear (usually Column A)

click in cell A1
Format
bullets and numbering
numbered
select a style
when you merge, the rows will automatically be numbered

This works only if you merge the Word table - which would be the main document - with a Word data file.

If you simply have a table which will not be merged, I know of no other way than to type in the numbers. If anyone else does I would appreciate a message.

I'd suggest using an AutoNumLgl field. Here's how:

1. Click where you want the serial number to go.
2. Click the Insert->Field menu item.
3. Select AutoNumLgl from the list box.
4. Click the Display Number in Legal Format without a Trailing Period check box.
5. Click OK.

I hope that helps.
