Being realistic is to know what's going on around you. Its to have high and low hopes and to learn how to almost never to be disappointed or unhappy. You know what's going on around you and you have an idea about whats going to happen. Its not too happy or too sad, but its being yourself.
Being pessimistic is to always assume the worst. When you're pessimistic and something good happens, you might be so surprised and it'll ruin whatever good it is.You never want to be pessimistic because you'll always be unhappy because your expectations of life are so low.

From what I understand about it, a realist sees all and any options given to a specific circumstances in order to resolve what's going on. This includes all options what could go wrong so as to try to prevent them from happening. And this is where a realist will differ from the pessimist, who in turn will see those options and justify why something can't be done.
Hope this sheds some light on your question.

I would say a realist tries to view things as they really are, good or bad. A pessimist always sees the bad side of things.

Being realistic, your opinion toward someone can be positive or negative. You are thinking of all the options! The glass is nonexistent.
Being pessimistic is always thinking of the negative. The glass is always half empty.

Being realistic is looking at a situation or the world as it really is, and not sugar coating it...
Being pessimistic is always looking for the worst in everything, even if that isn't necessarily the way the world really is...the whole "glass half empty" mentality....
Hope this helps! :)

Realistic, you know that alot of bad things happen in the world. But just like a cloudy day the sun has to shine through some time.
Pessimistic people tend to always look at the worst of things, for them there is no looking up, its all down hill.

Realism is rational.
Pessimism is chronic, illogical, and always biased.
Like our dear Cinthia said above, a realist takes inventory of both sides, weighs the probability of each outcome, along with each side's perceived utility, and makes the decision with the best risk/return ratio.
Realists are great investors. Pessimists are great cops and newsanchors.

A realist always looks at both sides, weighs the potential risks vs benefits of each choice.
Pessimisim looks at any situation and discovers the negative potential of each choice irregardless of the potential outcome.
