My kids don't ride the school bus- they're too young for primary school and I drive my daughter to preschool. My neighbor's kids are about seven or eight years old (twins) and she sends them to the end of the driveway to wait for the bus in the mornings. She doesn't wait with them, so I don't think she knows. This morning, when they got picked up, I was in my driveway at my car getting some things packed into my trunk to take to a friend's house and the neighbors kids were talking to me. The bus pulled up to pick up the kids and the driver was smoking a cigar in the bus- is this legal? I would think since he's got kids in the bus, they wouldn't want him to smoke on it. Should I call the school and let them know? Maybe I'm making too much of it..

I definitely would call the school and say something. I don't think you are overacting at all! There are to be no products of that sort on the bus at all and teachers, bus drivers or anyone working in the school should be held to the same standard as the students. If they can't do it, neither can the bus driver. Definitely call and you can make it an anonymous call. :) Just think, your children will be riding that bus one day!! :-/

I don't think it is legal. I think most schools are smoke free zones and the school bus is school property so I don't think the bus driver is allowed to smoke on the bus. I would definitely call the school and complain. The whole busload of kids is getting stuck inhaling second hand cigar smoke. It's bad for their health and they're all going to go to school reeking of cigar smoke. I don't think you're making too much of it. I can't believe none of the other parents have complained.

Tell the school. Better yet try to take a photo of him smoking the cigar, make sure that there is smoke coming out of it. You are not making too much of it. The thought of cigar smoke first thing in the morning makes me nauseous

That isn't legal and he should be reported. Smoking in public vehicles is against the law (this is a federal law, so it applies throughout).

I think that you should definitely report this. You are not over-reacting - in fact I am surprised that you are even considering not reporting it. Even if it is not illegal in your locality (but I suspect that it is), the health, welfare and safety of the children is paramount.

Regulations vary from state to state and from school district to school district. This makes it difficult for me to answer. If it concerns you, speak to the superintendent of the school district.
