Are you getting XP or Vista? If it's XP, you can get away with 512MB, but I would really get 1GB. If you are running Vista, get at least 2GB.

Yo "mom"
For straight up computer use and internet travels --- 1 gig
If you're planning to do a lot of "gaming" etc ---- you'll need to pump this puppy up by some measure ---- say 2 gig or better
Also --- the processing speed is a major thing here as well
and in today's computing climate you need to consider having a processor that is at least 2.4 ghz or over !!
Sticking with THESE guidelines should put you into a machine that is Web Ready and capable for the "speed you need" !! â¼

512MB is the absolute minimum, but 1024MB (a gigabyte) is probably what I'd go with, remember though that no matter how much ram you get, if your computer is full of spyware and bloatware it won't be any faster. You also probably want a 1.6 to 2gHz processor.
I also don't like Vista, and I think it's going the way of Windows ME, personally, I'd try to get XP if you can.

I'd say 1GB. You can buy computers with 512MB, but 1GB is the best compromise between price and performance right now. If you have 512MB you'll be frustrated because it's slow and end up paying to upgrade later.
