there are several good competitors to lego.
the most comparable is Fischer Technik. They have similar kits in the same price range.
The BOE-BOT kit by Parallax is the most widely known introductory robot kit. it is more advanced than the lego kit with a greater potential, but it is more technical to use.
In my store i carry kits made by INEX global. they are very competitively priced and come in various versions of complexity.
You can always build one from scratch. there are several good books, 'junkbots', 'robot builders bonanza' etc that will guide you step by step. but you'll have to make your own choices on microcontroller, motors, sensors, etc.
