It does seem that way but strange things can happen as you get older. Just look at Griffey and all the issues he has faced. However, A-Rod is not Griffey and my guess is that he finishes with 800 plus.

Get real guys . How can anybody reasonably project what an athlete will do 8-10 years down the road ?
Edit :
Steven S I understand how projections are done But if you're going to do a projection on an aging athlete you have to assume that it is more likely that he will not break the record because he got injured then that he will break the record because he managed to remain injury free. If you are going to judge the future by what happened in the past then the past history of sluggers tells us that after a certain age there is a drop off in home run production.

How can you all down Bonds? Yeah maybe he used HGH to help his game but think i few years back when Mcgwire hit 70 homers comon everyone was doing it back then and Bonds is just trig to keep up. Any ways to answer the question I don't think A- Rod will break 73homers this year or even 755 plus when Bonds breaks it.If you wanna know who i think will break the all time record after Bonds does it i think Albert Pujols i mean look at this guy hes the first player in MLB histoy to ever hit 35 plus homers in his first 6 season he will break it sooner or later. Pujols is just all around a great player and he plays the game with his heart.

He should easily break the home run record and I think end up with around 850 homers. Of course, that depends on if he stays healthy for a majority of the remainder of his career.
Mr Danger...one can reasonably forecast future performance based on past performance. This is the best way to predict how A-Rod will do in the future. I'm a financial adviser and forecasting how a player will perform is quite similar to forecasting how a stock will perform in the market. Its not setting anything in stone or guaranteeing anything but more like making an educated assumption based on past performance.

I'd think that as each season passes, his skills will definitely diminish. If he gets injured, that would be a huge amount of HR's missed, especially if it's a long stretch on the shelf.
I'd say he has a 50/50 chance to pass the record up, but we'll never know because possibly the law of averages may be against him. We'll see in about 7-8 years.

It's always dangerous to expect things in baseball. What, for instance, if Alex Rodriguez has a plan to retire at 35? What if he steps off a street curb and is injured out of the game? Yes, of all the current players he seems most likely and considering his age he seems almost certain to do it, but baseball fates are fickle.

If he can avoid a serious injury i think he's a lock to break the record.

i think that it is safe to say tha he will destroy it. boras says that he could play untill he is 45, which i dont boubt. i can see him hitting 1000 if he has the opportunity to play for that long.
