Think about it. You have the choices of the nominated candidates, or you can do a write-in ballot which most folks use for "Joe the Barber" or "Mr. Smith down at the drugstore".

If we all went to the polls and wrote in "ham sandwich" on a write-in ballot, neither nominated candidate would be elected and Congress would be forced to pass legislation and budgets by veto override (because there would be no one to sign stuff), just to keep the government running.

Effectively, Congress would have to come to a 2/3 concensus in both houses and would probably draft some pretty acceptable legislation.

Thoughts?

Sounds great, but every vote for Ham Sandwich would be invalid, and the same as staying home.
Those who didn't play along would elect the President..even if Ham Sandwich won by an overwhelming majority

Congress is as much of a problem in governing the country now as the President, and you want them to pick our next leader? Sheesh.

Plus, a ham sandwich as president just wouldn't be kosher. Or halal, for that matter.

Any candidate that would repeal existing laws before creating new ones would get my vote.
As long as your ham sanwich didn't flip-flop while sitting on the fence, he'd get my vote.
But what if lobbyists tried to bribe him with mustard or a side order of fries?
