My mom always cleaned her iron with a paste made from baking soda and water.

You'll also need a little elbow grease and a clean cloth to do this.

Put some vinegar directly on a cloth and rub it over the iron surface. It should come right off. Vinegar is a great polish for pots and pans as well.
You can also get the brown stuff off that shirt by putting some vinegar in your wash, or by dabbing a bit of vinegar on the spot, wait for a few minutes and then wash as usual.

a product called Iron Off.....available at Sewing/Crafting Stores like Joanns. I have used this and it gets off the iron on sticky glues from different sewing projects. Iron on interfacing etc. Works great.
Just for info:
While in Manicuring School, I spilt a whole bottle of nail polish on my White Coat. Couldn't clean it until I got home. I used Acetone to remove the polish from the fabric. This was 100% Cotton. The polish came out and I did use an old towel under-neath knowing I would toss out the towel. Well then I rinsed it in hot very soapy water, and washed and dried in the dryer, and all the stains came out. No harm done to the fabric. Acetone will eat thru nylon, and polyesters, so be careful of the fabric content or you will melt holes in stuff.
