Formatting the computer will not "harm" it. In fact, it is good for the computer to have it done about once a year.
However, formatting does erase everything on the computer. So if you have an music, pictures, documents, etc that you want to keep, you will want to copy them off the computer and on to a CD/DVD/memory sticks/external hard drive/ etc. first.
After you have done the format and reinstall of Windows you will also have to reinstall any other programs that you need on to your computer. So be sure you have the disk or install files for those before you format the drive.

If you know the name of the virus, post it on here and our techs will help you remove it. re formatting should always be a last resort.
If you do want to reformat then make sure you back up your files and any saved data first.
reformat with your SP1 disc then goto the microsoft website and upgrade it back to SP2, so no it won't harm your system, just look for a way to get rid of the virus first.

It will more than likely make your computer run alot faster. No it will not "harm or spoil", but it will erase EVERYTHING on your hard drive. If you have any information on there that is not backed up, boot into safe mode and back it up.
To get into safe mode, turn your computer on.
Repeatedly press F8
You will be prompted to choose a boot mode.
Select "Safe Mode"
