My little toes are strictly for snagging on chair legs and the dresser in the middle of the night.

The reason you have little toes is because you need toes of different lengths, starting with the right foot right to left little getting bigger. Now if the toes were all the same size your shoes would have flat ends like a box. Thus all shoes would look alike, no pointed ones corn plaster manufactures would be out of business, pointed shoes would be another 6" longer with stuff put in to keep them in shape. Besides, how would you be able to sing that little rhyme to small children, 'This little piggy went to market'. Stands to reason, doesn't it.

Balance... the big toes are on the inside to steady your body. If the little toes were on the inside our arches would roll in toward the middle. Then you knees would hit and it would throw your back out.

Well, you've already answered one part -- to hang up on socks. The other is to whack in the night. I think I've done that so many times that the nail bed is split, so they REALLY hang up on socks.

They keep us balanced when we walk, if we had big toes we could use for like hanging in trees we'd walk around swaying from side to side like a bunch of apes, not very attractive.

Never thought about it. Why? let's see what others have to say here. Maybe to balance ourselves??? come to think of it, why do we have the big toe??? to make a hole in the sock???

We wouldn't be able to walk as well if all of our toes were the same size (like the big toe). We couldn't walk gracefully.

I would have said for balance, too; but I know too many people who have all 10 toes and they're not too well balanced, if you know what I mean.
