They make a chrome cleaning spray that I use at work. It's awesome. You should be able to find it at any Dept. store or automotive store...

Sounds as if the chrome has been eaten off, and this reveals the brass underneath. If that is the case the whole thing needs to be replaced. I poured acetone down the bathroom sink once, and the finish is long gone. They do over time wear off exposing the brass or metal underneath. Also, acetone eats the garbage disposal rubber thing. I did that too, so watch what you pour down the sink. How did I do this twice, soaking off acrylic nails, how else.

There are only two things that work. One is Viakal which is a Greek anti-limescale thingy which comes in a bottle or a trigger in a white and blue bottle. It is like a liquid miracle. The other one is Bath Power with the label "shock, this product really works" on it. It's Australian and quite pricey (3.99) but really worth it as it really works! I can buy them both quite easily locally in London.

Baking soda.
A wonderful thing to do to bathroom sinks once a month is baking soda and boiling water. It prevents clogged pipes too. Baking soda also does wonders for cleaning a stainless steel kitchen sink.

Try putting a weak solution of bleach and water in the sink, leave for a few minutes and rinse well. I do this every week and have no problem.
