I just wonder if people are fed up with the shops pushing Christmas at everyone from October and if it will get to be like Easter, which was a fairly big deal in the 60's but now no-one really bothers. ( I mean no offence to Christians btw, I mean the commercialism of it all)

I think that Christmas is still a major money maker for retailers. With the advance in technology, many people don't even leave their house anymore. They are able to do their shopping online. And with websites like the one recently featured on the news, they can have other people do it for them!

But do I think that people celebrate the commercialism of Christmas and the materialistic value of "gifts" instead of the real joy of Christmas? Absolutely.

So many people spend - and over spend - in the months leading up to Christmas that it is unreal. With the cost of most of todays' "hot list" items, it hard not to go over budget. I believe that people are celebrating the depth of their pocketbooks rather than the birth of Jesus, and spending most of the rest of the year catching up from it.

Good question, btw.

Christmas has been ruined by commercialism these days. I do not come from a religious family, but I always remember Christmas as being a happy time when all of the family got together. Now I feel obliged to buy a present for someone you hardly ever see!! I still like that time of year as I have children, but once they stop believing in Father Christmas the magic will disappear.

Yeah I think there's a danger of that, people are getting sick of Christmas and all the pressure of buying gifts months in advance, let alone cards, food, decorations etc! It'll get to a point where they're putting our stuff in June and then people will get sick of Christmas and maybe scale it back. Then again I think if we didn't have easter non-religious people wouldn't notice too much but I think people need Christmas because of it's time in the year - we need a few days off in the winter and something to mark the end of the year.

Yeah, just seen first christmas stuff in shops here in Spain. Only difference here is the sun is still shining and it doesn´t feel like that time of year. Too much commercialism just for one day and like you say its not really celebrated as a religious holiday. We go down the beach with plenty of champagne and a take away chicken. Can´t beat it!

Not like Christmas any more, all the cards, paper and gifts are in the shops already and by the time Christmas comes we will all be fed up looking at the Christmas windows, just not what it used to be any more.

Christmas is an important day to me but it has been way to commercialized, I am sick of seeing Christmas in the store before Halloween is even here, I think people get to carried away with gift buying and decorations to even think about what Christmas is really about.

I haven't celebrated Xmas in over twenty years. I now give friends presents on my birthday and entertain for New Year's Eve and occasionally the winter solstice. I used to enjoy Xmas and the whole Santa Claus/tree thing, but that was before America became a theocracy under Regan.

We,ve forgotten what the true meaning of Christmas really is. I suggested to my kids the other day that we should help out in a soup kitchen or do some other voluntary work this Christmas.

They were horrified at the thought.

Thats why we,re definetely going to do it.
( Protesting or not )

They need to learn that theres under privelaged people living at the heart of our society and you dont need to go to Africa to find someone homeless & starving.

The world is a much smaller place. Now if you live in a 1st world country you can go any where to see any one, it's not such a big deal, Christianity is much less popular now than 70 years ago when most people believed in it.
