most overseas military bases (iraq and afghanistan included) the fast food restaurants are owned and run by the exchange service (AAFES or NEX) and their employees from other bases volunteer to be deployed to these places to do like the management jobs and such. these arent high paid haliburton contractors or anything......these are mostly spouses and adult children OF active duty members who make roughly $7 an hour normally, when deployed they get the same extra pay as the troops.......and their pay is tax free as well. They employ local nationals .....as well as 3rd country nationals (for instance Saudis in Iraq) for the majority of the jobs.

Ive never seen a McDonalds but you do get Pizza Hut, Burger Kings and Subways on most US large bases. They are run by civvy contractors and are mainly staffed by asians.
Tim Horton's are staffed by Canadians.
I take my hat off to them, both the staff and the companies. The staff go through the same attacks as the soldiers and the companies take on a huge risk of supporting their troops in what is an unpopular war. You would be surprised how many companies will have nothing to do with the Armed forces for fear of damaging their PR.
You cant believe what a BK whopper meal can do for morale when you've been out on a FOB on hard routine.
The Brits have the NAAFI which sell such usefull things as diving masks and snorkels (I'm not joking) which come in dead handy in the middle of Helmand province.

managed by Civilian Contractors and staffed by locals, for the most part.
BTW: every major US military installation at home and abroad has either a Micky D's or a Gurble Bing, depending on Branch you can also find Popeye's Chicken, Dunkin' Donuts, A&W, Robin Hood and at least one Chinese or Japanese fast food place. Heck, In Japan, we had a full service Sbarro's.

Typically it will be civillians (in Germany, the workers at the Burger King on Post were spouses of the military, not Germans) in Afghanistan, it would most likely be locals, as military spouses arent allowed to travel to Afghanistan yet.

There's a Tim Horton's coffee shop in Kandahar staffed by Canadian employees of the company.
Nothing in the world is better than a large IceCapp on a hot Afghan summer day.
hmmmmmmmm.................

Employee's of AAFES (Army Air Force Exchange Services) work in these food installations. Usually, these employees are volunteers who are not married and have no children.
