my mum recently got surgery and she cant walk normally for now and my jack russell, whom is usually jumpy and energetic has just been sitting or laying there everytime my mum talks to him or walks by him. he is very calm around her as if he knows she's sick and cant handle him being annoying. is this possible?
if so, i cant believe how respectful he is. is it in a jack russell's nature to be like this?
thanks

Dogs definitely sense when things aren't normal. My dogs always try to nurse me when I'm sick - they'll go so far as to jump on my bed and lay with their head on me, which is something they're generally not allowed to do.
There have been studies showing dogs can also sense death. Some dogs are trained to predict seizures, they're even trying to determine if dogs can detect cancer in patients to which they've had an 80% success rate.

All dogs know yes. They tend to lick the surrounding area of pain. Some have even detected cancer.

They are very protective during this time. Its isnt just jack russels though.

My nan had a serious case of psorios and her dog was always licking her and it helped it alot!

all dogs can recognize body language. This is normal for most dogs.
I know what you mean though. I was watching a friend's JR for about 2 weeks, and we had a rough night on Friday (drinking, not the dog) and I was worried because we were SUPER tired and normally he's very energetic. Luckily though, he slept in bed with us all day and was super sweet.
Dogs are great!

Dogs are excellent at reading body language, your mum is obviously very sore and isn't showing signs to play with the dog. In fact, her body language should be obvious even to you, look for an arm or two placed in front of her body. Dogs rely on body language to communicate since they cant talk like us. Its not a sixth sense like we know it, just natural behaviour without language.

all dogs have this ability to know when someone is sick .but as far as your jack russel goes. i have one too and so far she has been the smartest dog i have ever owned.give your dog all the love and respect he deserves.and he will do the same for you. hope your mother gets back on her feet soon so she can enjoy her dog.

Its in all dogs nature to act in that way, its instinct, and they know, believe me they do.

My dog knows when Im hurt and she knows when Im upset. She will come up to the coach and just lay her head on my lap, or come over and put her paw on me... things she will only do when Im feeling upset. Which isnt to often, she has changed my life and made me so happy.
