An automatic overdrive transmission is a 4 speed automatic. You should keep the car in overdrive at all times. The transmission will shift in and out of overdrive automatically as needed!
The only times that you should shift to drive is if you are traveling at a speed where the car is constantly shifting in and out of overdrive ( usually about 37 MPH) and it bothers you, or if you are towing a trailer! You may also want to downshift on a extreme downhill grade!

When you drive in overdrive, the transmission shifts and performs the same as in drive, until you get to higher speeds. It is the same as having a three or four speed (OD) manual transmission. The first three gears are the same, you just have the fourth (more efficient) gear to go to in the 4 speed!

This vehicle may be equipped with a light driver module, a small circuit board enclosed in a small plastic housing taped to the harness behind the glove box. The light driver module could be failing. Also when one of the solenoids that actuate a computer controlled system such as Exhaust Gas Recirculation, Evaporative purge control or the transmission torque converter clutch (TCC) becomes shorted the high current flow through the ECM (on-board computer) can damage the ECM, in that case the light could "flicker" and the ECM would have to be replaced. The Service Engine Soon light should never "flicker" It's either ON or OFF. Flickering could indicate an internal failure of the ECM. Another scenario I have seen is a wire chafing on the exhaust manifold or an engine bracket causing the light to flicker but usually that would eventually blow a fuse. Early "G" body (formally A bodies) cars developed water leaks around the windshield that would allow water to travel down the "A" pillar into the ECM. If the windshield has been replaced there might be a possibility of a poor sealing job such as a gap in the sealer material.

Yes, in fact select overdrive even when you are not on the freeway. I steps up the gearing or shift rate of your transmission and will save you gas. The only time that you need to put the transmission selector at D is if you require a faster start off the line or more passing power. Back in this time I usd to sell this car for a new car dealrship and am very familar with the vehicle. Enjoy it is a good car

Does not hurt a thing to leave it on overdrive at all times. In fact can save you some gas if it is allowed to upshift to the higher gear above 35. The other drive is for long hill downgrades and if pulling a trailer to prevent constant shifting.

Overdrive will give you the feeling of turbo boost on the freeway... but will bite at your transmission. Overdrive is good in high trafic-stop and go situations to save gas ;-)

Cruise that 91B Regal... don't try to push it unless you plan on replacing parts for street modifications.

Yes it is true. But when I took drivers ed 12 years ago they taught us to keep it in overdrive all the time.

Correct. Overdrive improves gas mileage but gives up some pulling power.

uhhhh yeah. true you lose some pulling power but say you decide u really wanna get on the accelerator on the freeway if you do it in regular drive you will eventually blow up the motor my friend did the same thing in his f150 when we were racing

hell yeah it's true!!! if your travelling about 100+ kms you should put it in over drive (it acts like a sixth gear) and takes some strain out of the cars 5th and saves you a s#*t load on fuel!

don't listen to them. they don't know what there talking about. overdrive is for when you are going up a hill, a very steep hill.
