Re: Fleas

Frontline is a good remedy for fleas, but you have to make sure that you apply it properly. If applied on the neck or on the back, the cat can actually turn it's head around and lick it off. It will not hurt the cat; you will just be wasting your money. The correct way to apply it is on the base of the skull in an inch strip directly on the skin. If you are someone who bathes their cat, you can bathe it, just make sure the fur in completely dry before application. Also, the type of shampoo doesn't matter. If you need or want to bathe them in between applications then you MUST use a soap free shampoo. This is sold at most veterinary clinics. We sell some that smell just like human shampoo. Since flea medication is oil based and regular shampoo strips the oil off the skin (that is how it cleans) the medication will wash off too and you will be wasting your money and the fleas will come back. Frontline also is the most water resistant and it has a high potentcy for a couple more weeks than Advantage. Something else you should also know; do NOT use a flea treatment like Frontline with a flea collar. It will seem like a logical thing to do to get rid of the fleas faster, but in fact the combination of the two doses of medication could actually hurt your cat. Many people come into the clinic thinking that they are getting rid of the fleas faster when they are actually causing an overdose of medication for their cat. Lastly, if your cat is inside and the contamination is bad enough, you would need to get something to treat any place that your cat spends time like a bed, couch; any favored place. The spray should be sold at your vet's clinic also.

First, fleas do not live on an animal. This is a common myth as I have been told by my vet. They merely jump on an animal to get food and once they are finished with their feast they jump back off. You need to not only treat your cats but your house as well otherwise the infestation will continue after the drops or flea collars have lost their effect (1-3 months) I had a serious outbreak this season with my animals, cats and dogs. I treated them with anything I could get my hands on but once the treatment wore out the fleas were back. I went to my vet and asked why it was still occuring even with flea collar's on after the neck treatments and she told me about the myth. Well, I went to Wal-Mart and picked up this product that has performed miracles in my eyes. It's called Nature's Gaurdian, it's a powder and you can spread it anywhere in your house, couch, bed, cat bed, any and all floors and it's completely safe for you and your cats. I was not able to afford anymore drops for my animals because I have a smaller budget and spent the money on the powder and after one month all the fleas in the house were dead along with the one's on my animals. It works miracles like I said. Now I would also suggest purchasing some drops and you can get drops at Wal-Mart that work just as well as the one's at the vet and cost a lot less. Then use that powder. Powder your house one-two times a week for a month. If the fleas are not completely gone by the next month keep it up and they will soon disappear from your sight. Another thing that is very inexpensive and can help emenesly is a flea bath. I used this once all the fleas in the house were dead just to be on the safe side. If your cats aquired these fleas from outside then you should consider, powdering where they come in from even after the fleas are gone and giving them drops every month. You don't want a flea collar on an outdoor cat because they could get it tangled in something and end up accidently choking to death. I hope this helps, I know I could've used the help when I was having all the trouble of terrible fleas and now at least I can pass it on to another in need. Good luck and remember that product is called, " Nature's Gaurdian" and it's found at Wal-Mart.

a product called "frontline plus" works really well on my cats. (my friend uses "advantage" and says it works well too.) you can get it online but i recommend you talk to your vet first.

you apply the flea medicine once a month on all your kitties at the same time. it might take several months to get rid of all the fleas. it'd be a nice idea to give your cats a nice warm bath (and let them dry of course) before applying the medicine. also try to clean your room often, wash your couch covers, and change your bed sheets since fleas jump around and leave eggs there.

you can also comb their hair often, and when you catch fleas, make sure you squeeze them between the surface of your nails until you hear (or feel) them go "pop!" ...i know it sounds gross but u wanna be sure they're really dead and they don't die easily unless you pop their bodies!!

this might help you too http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/cat_care/keys_to_a_healthy_cat/cats_common_health_problems.html

oh! one more thing... keep your kitties indoor so they won't get more fleas and ticks from outside that can carry some unwanted diseases :) good luck to you SP!

I have a dog and a cat and do not use any chemicals on them.
What i use is a nit comb 50p from the chemist. Sit your pet down on your lap and gently comb all the way through the hair. My pets really love all the attention and it gets rid of all the fleas. Hope this helps. It works every time for me.

If you have a branch of Wilson's Pet Shops, they are allowed to sell "Frontline", if not, it will have to be a Vet.
We've just nearly (cross fingers) beaten an infestation in our cats - who are house cats; how unfair is that?
Frontline isn't cheap, a 3-dose pack and a space spray to spray around radiators, etc., will set you back around £20.
To monitor the success of your efforts, comb them with a flea comb (I do mine by the bathroom sink and wash any hoppers straight down the hole with hot water) - this will let you see how many blood specks are around.
Also, we have a couple of bowls of water, to which we add a drop of washing up liquid (breaks the surface tension). We leave a table lamp beside each bowl overnight on thelanding and in the hall, and count the drowned fleas in the morning. They are attracted by the heat, leap towards it, fall back in the water and die.
Vacuum everywhere, daily and empty the container straight into your outside bin.
My cats had started sleeping in the wash basins - I guess they reckoned the fleas couldn't jump that high!

ditto on the vet, he/she can give you an oral medication for the cats that will kill the fleas when they bite, the cats wil be flea free in about 24 hrs. but you must treat your home at the same time-follow the vet's instructions. It also helps to put a few mothballs into your vacuum cleaner-they will kill any fleas the vacuum picks up otherwise the nasty little bloodsuckers will just get out on you and re-infest the home. keeping mothballs in your vacuum and using it on a daily basis will help prevent infestation as they drop off the cat after feeding to nest & lay eggs....Good Luck

Get advantage flea drops for cats from your vet. Put the whole tube, it's just a tiny one, on the back of it's neck and in no time your cat will be rid of fleas.

A treatment from a vets - Frontline, Advantage or Revolution. Frontline Plus is probably the best for fleas.

Don't use anything from a pet store, because stores aren't allowed to sell the proper chemicals - i.e the ones that actually work and aren't toxic, so they just sell random stuff.
