Literary Meaning:
Namasté or Namaskar (from internal sandhi between namaḥ and te) is an Indian greeting or parting phrase as well as a gesture.
Taken literally, it means "I bow to you". The word is derived from Sanskrit (namas): to bow, obeisance, reverential salutation, and (te): "to you".
It also reflects that I bow to the god within you. The person opposite reflects the same and bow to the god within you.
Philosophy behind it:

Philosophy says there are 10 ways to reach god. The name of this 10 fold path is called Yoga. It is "Yoga". Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word "Yujir".

Yujir : meaning :
- that which leads to thee
- that which makes the "geevathma" (Microcosmic) to merge and become one with "paramathma" (Macrocosmic) or omniscient and omnipotent

The 10 fingers of your hand reflect the same. You bring your palms together touch all the fingers with one another; place it in front of your chest. It conveys to the other person two things:

You are reminding him about these 10 fold path and also remind him that he should follow at least one of them if not all.

Now observe your hand. Your fingers are point upwards … that is pointing towards the almighty and look the thumb, it is point towards your heart. It symbolized and tells the other person that if you follow these 10 paths, you the Jeevathma - You (thumb towards your heart) will melt and merges with the Paramathma (pointing upwards). Paramathma meaning –Supreme God, Almighty, Allah, that one god we all worship.

Our body has pressure points. This is what is used in Acupuncture. These acupuncture points are spread across your body and they are connected through 14 paths. All of these paths come to your finger end and then move towards your ear, proceed towards your eyes and then reach the brain.

When you touch these finger ends it actually stimulates many parts of your body. This is what we call it is as Mudras.

For example a Chin Mudra is where your press the end of your thumb finger with the end of your fore finger. When these two are pressed, it increases your spiritual interest.

Namashkar is done with Anjali mudra. This Mudra is good for all types of health issues. When you keep doing it, you become more health.

Since all these pressure points are there in the ear, we give punish the children by twisting the ear. This increases their memory power. A dull student who is not concentrating would become perfect. We also tell children to bow in front of god, holding the ear (sorry pulling the ear down).

This is the same reason why people would role in front of the temple. By rolling yourself in the ground, you actually press all the pressure points.

Similarly since these points are also reaching the eyes, doctors can see these points in the eyes. Depending on the color of these points, they can tell you what problem you have. That is why, those days we did not had blood test, urine test or other tests. Doctor would just open your eyes and diagnose your health problem.

Please friends, if you don't know read it and leave it at that. Don't compare it to other religions etc. I just gave explaination to Namashkar which they do it in India. That is it, not any other greetings across the globe people do it. I am not saying it is the right way nor I am saying it is the best..

For all of my friends, we greet each other with hugs. With me close friends, it is a hug and a kiss on the cheek. When I meet new adults it is usually a hand shake but when I meet adults who I have known for a while it is either a hug or an air kiss, which is what every one does in the area I live in.

the more practical reason for the namaste(as it is more commonly called) is so you dont have to touch the persons hands, this keeps u cleaner, god knows where they had their hands last..................
(and i did see u pick ur nose,so instead of the handshake, namaste to u)
