The limit for your wedding dress has to be how much you can afford. Shop around and look through magazines to get an idea of the type of dress you want and then try to find it cheaper!
Great ways to save money are to buy a second hand dress - there are lots of women selling their dresses some haven't even been worn - as they have changed their mind on the dress. Mad but true.
Look out for sales, look online and even go out of town as some areas are cheaper than others.

I can tell you that the dress I wore when I got married almost 20 years ago cost $900.00. That was the dress only. The veil, slip, special bra etc.... were extra. I don't know what that would amount to with inflation today but I'd pick that dress in a heartbeat all over again. I was actually looking at a dress another poster wanted opinions on and it was a little under $500 and was beautiful. I think it really depends on how much you can afford and the style of dress you want. When I got married it was fashionable to wear lots of lace, beading, you know.... foo foo stuff.
If you're on a budget (of sorts) then tell the shop assistant that you are looking for dresses in the (name and amount but make it a little lower that you actually plan to spend cause they'll bring out dresses a little more than what you tell them anyway). If they continue to bring out dresses over your limit then thank them and leave.
Most of all pick a dress that you love and will be happy with even when you look back at your pictures 20+ years from now.
Have a beautiful wedding.

Hi there:)
My wedding dress is costing just under $2000 (Australian dollars) which is WAY over the limit I had set myself. However, I am having a black dress and knew I just could not find what I wanted in stores. I think there should be no limit. You only plan to get married once, so you may as well have what you want and feel fabulous, than scrimp and look back with regret.

It depends upon what you can afford. I have some ideas of what I would like and am finding thos dresses are $800 to $1,600 plus a $300 fee for meeting with the maker.
And I want something simpler than a traditional wedding dress. I am considering noting what I like about different dresses and consulting another dressmaker or asking a close relative that is good with sewing to make the dress for me.
I know most traditional dress would cost $500 and up and personally I wouldn't want to spend alot on a dress I'm only going to wear for one day in my life.

Before I started looking, I had no preconceived notions, because I knew it could be from hundreds to tens of thousands. I think in my head I was kind of thinking that I could afford to spend a thousand to a thousand and a half for everything related.
Turns out I found the gown of my dreams for just under 800, and with alterations, veil and tiara, it was 1000.

I would prefer to not go over $500 (US) for my gown. Just a few days after we get married in the city we live in, we're flying to India for a reception with my fiance's parents and other family who live there. So...we'll have to buy formal Indian clothes once we arrive. Not wedding attire necessarily, but very formal clothes. In all, I want to keep my total 'clothes' budget in the $800 - $1000 range.

I hoped to spend no more than $200, which was a rediculous amount...once I started trying on dresses, I changed my tune...I forgot all about my plan, and bought the dress I liked best, which was $725 or so, plus $100 on alterations.

Honestly, I didn't want to spend a lot on my dress. But when I went into the store and put this one dress on, I felt regal, like a princess, something out of another world. It is $1200 and I am going to order it.
