They know they've been spiteful but this is a way of pretending they are doing evil for God, they are pretending the end justifies the means ... everything is a pretence for these people so what can I say other than that they are bonkers.

God Bess! (look her up)

I think it is a way of ending what they have said. Like some will say "Good day to you," or "Hail The Gods" as I have seen written by some pagans. It may be an attempt to soften their words, but is futile if they will insult you anyway. I dislike it as it seems hypocritical; religion teaches you to be tolerant and respect others not to be rude and then say "God bless you" as if that makes it alright and justifies the insult.

Among certain social circles in the Southern states of the U.S., there's an unwritten but universally accepted rule of etiquette: Basically, it's perfectly okay to share the most insulting, vicious, catty gossip about a person as long as one says "... bless her heart" at the end.

This must be similar.

Many will become offended when it comes to truth. But it does not mean you can not love people even when the truth hurts!

God Bless You!!

Some things we might call insulting but other things we call insulting may be the truth that need to be heard. Some of us don't want to hear the truth.

Mainly it's down to superstition, akin to saying or doing something to ward off 'evil spirits' or 'bad luck'. Of course there is often a little bit of 'See, I am so good and holy' involved.

I think it makes them feel like they did it as a form of "Divine retribution" on sinners, heretics, witches, pagans, buddhists, muslims, germans, heathens, baptists, protestants, catholics, mormons, jokers, and people who eat meat on friday.

Especially Atheists
