Possible but very rare. It's called molar(not sure of spelling) pregnancy. Knew a girl that had this happen a few years ago.

(with my 2nd child) I had ultrasounds at 6, 8, 10, 12, 20, 30, and 35 weeks.
At my 6, 8, & 10 it was easy to see a small cyst on one ovary, a baby without a heart beat, and a baby with a heart beat. They get so detailed that with the no heartbeat baby they could see that it was not implanted very well thus may not develop. Doctors can see more in these test than they will ever let you know; unless you get a very talktive one.

In some cases, you can have belly expansion but no baby apparent because of a certain kind of pregnancy complication, a hydatidiform mole (molar pregnancy).
Those are diagnosed by ultrasound.
A very early ultrasound might miss a baby entirely, as they're hard to spot for the first 6 weeks.

It can be two things. First, somethin gcalled mola hydatidosa, it will make you home pregnancy test positive, ie. look like you are pregnant, but no fetus will be present. Your uterus will be growing, too, to accomodate the mola (which is essentially a mass of pre-cancerous cells) YOu have to get treated for this one and have the mass removed, because it can turn into cancer if left there.
Secondly. it can be phantom pregnancy. For whatever reason you imagine you are pregnant, you can even have borderline levels of pregnancy hormones, your periods are absent but your uterus will not grow and eventually you will have to learn that you are not pregnant. That happens when you desperately want to get pregnant most often. No treatment neccessary, it has to run its course.
The ultrasound is pretty accurate in establishing even 4-5 week old embryos, so most likely if there is nothing on the ultrasound you are not pregnant.
Hope this helps,

If you haven't taken a pregnancy test that's the more obvious thing to do very early on. I don't even see why an ultrasound is necessary if you have no other evidence of a pregnancy. I do think an ultrasound should be able to detect it though.

sounds more like a phantom pregnancy when a woman convinces herself she is pregnant and she stops menstruating, gets all the pregnancy symptoms and the belly starts growing. A doctor would be able to tell if there was a fetus in your uterus, even if it was very early. They normally just put you under anaesthetic and when you wake up the pregnancy symptoms will dissapear.

Usually they don't schedule an ultra sound until they can see something on the Ultrasound. I am not sure if what you are asking is possible. You may have to wait until later to find out. You may also have a tubal pregnancy.

It is called a Hysterical Pregnancy. Which means the mind & sometimes even the body feels pregnant.
You didn't say how far along you are.
Or is this just a "what if" question?
You need to talk to your doctor about your concerns

Why don't you ask your doctor these questions? It's only normal to wonder things; they don't mind questions. Your doctor knows what's going on. We don't have any way of knowing.

It is not impossible. Baby home or (uterus) might have infection because it is growing in size.
