When visiting your doctor, would you prefer a 10-15 min visit that included less socializing and a short time in the waiting room or a 30-45 minute visit involving a long wait and more socialzing. The level of medical care would be the same in each. Assume the physician is friendly and polite in both situations. What would you prefer as a patient.

Efficiency every time for me!

BUT, I do know people who would prefer to socialise ... especially elderly folk whose main form of human contact is at the doc.

Horses for courses, I guess.

Cheers :-)

If the level of care were the same then I would prefer a more social doctor that would make me feel comfortable about asking him questions if I needed to. I don't think a 30 - 45 min visit would be necessary though. I'd be happy with 10-20 min. My current doctor has one foot out the door from the moment he says hello and I can never get a question in before he dashes out.

The doctors I have seen lately don't seem to have a problem with "efficiency" -- they're out the door practically 5 minutes after they walk in. I'd like a doctor who will sit down for a bit and discuss with me the factors that are helping him/her make the decisions and recommendations they are giving. Although I'm not a doctor, I know a lot about science/medicine and I like to be informed about what's going on. So I feel that a doctor who respects me enough to explain things to me and answer my questions is the right doctor for me. Notice this is not random socializing -- "How's your family? What do you think about the Red Sox" -- this is complete, thorough discussion about the medical issues in question.

I'm not so sure that the wait time has to be connected to the length of the visit. It's due more to how many people the doctor will book in a day.

If I need more time with the doctor, I let the Med. Assistant know at the time of making the appointment.

Generally, though I prefer efficiency.

Of course it has to be efficiency but a doctor has to build up trust with his patients so this is where I would say a little simple chat does the job.

I'd prefer it short without much socialization. I don't go to a doctor to chat, I go there to get help for my health problems.

As long as the doctor helps me with my problem and keeps me informed about what's going on I'm satisfied.

I prefer efficiency but that might be because my doctor keeps telling me to quit smoking while performing a pelvic exam... "Yes, yes, I'll quit, just get outta there!"

i doubt anyone goes to the doctor to meet new people so less chatter and more work the shorter the visit the better...

Less waiting time, and about one minute of socialising.
