Yes, the mount is a side mount. Only a side mount will work on a Winchester model 94 because it ejects the empties straight up. A side mount is a bit awkward for some people but it is the only thing that will work. One alternate would be a tang peep sight. The .30-30 is a short range gun so a peep sight would be fine for shots unter 150 yards. If you want a scope and do not like the idea of a side mount, you can have a gunsmith mount a long eye relief scope or a Red Dot sight forward of the action. I think it looks a bit odd but if asthetics are not an issue, it will certainly work. LER scopes are most often used on handguns and are readily available. Whether a long eye relief or regular scope, I recommend a fixed power of not more than 4 power. Like I said, a '30-30 is a short range rifle so you don't need more than 4X. Spend your money on quality lenses instead of the unnecessary variable power mechanics in a scope. You will have a MUCH better scope for your money and will be much more satisfied. All of the above mentioned sights are available from such places as Cabellas or Brownells. What ever you do, don't go cheap on your sights. Be prepared to spend some money and get a good sight. If your rifle isn't worth a good sight, then save your money and stick with the open sights that you already have. Cheap sights are just a waste of money and can ruin a hunting trip.

I have a Win. 94 and I put a side mount on it using the existing holes and didn't like it (it's not over the center of the gun, shells hit it when ejecting, etc.) so I took it off and you'd never know I had a scope on it. I went with a Scout mount by Burris. If you want a scope, this is the way to go. I put a 2X6X32 pistol scope on it and it shoots great. With a low power scope you can pick a target up as fast if not faster than open sights. Also, at longer ranges, 150 yards for example, a scope is far more accurate than iron sights.

Do you really want to put a scope on the 94? It's such a beautiful and compact and "handy" rifle to use, I just do not understand putting a scope up top and making it so much more cumbersome. Those side mounts are butt ugly too and with the 94 that the way to go, unless you use a forward mount LER....

Unless you are old and of failing eyesight, you should be able to see the 150 yard effective range of the 94. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think that hunters have become too dependent on optics and no one knows how to actually shoot anymore. One guy I know has blamed missing that trophy elk at least three times in the past decade on "scope".

My grandfather had a lever Marlin 336 that he used from his 40s into his late 70s and he had a Lyman peep sight on the tang. He never came home emptyhanded due to a missed shot.

Sorry for getting on my soapbox, but we are not talking 350 yard shots with a lever gun. Some guy told me scopes were more 'humane' and I told him you just can't shoot!

There are several different style mounts, including those hideous high "see through" monstrosities sold to the inexperieced. I don't know why you'd bother, though. There's a couple of leverguns with scopes floating around my family, and I've never seen the utility in the things. If you are in a situation when you might want a scope, it's probably better just to carry a scoped bolt-gun, and leave the 94 "clean" and handy to play to its strengths.

Yeah I have a 94 with a scope on it. Just talk to a reputable gun store and they can hook you up.

Most definitely, the Winchester 94 is one of the most popular hunting rifles ever made.
