....anywhere near as much as television might lead one to believe? Or is it (self)censorship of "Oh my GOD"?

The reason I wonder is because all the people I am around say GOD and the people on the boob tube seem to say GOSH a lot. I can't tell if the latter are just a whole different set of people than those I know/live around, or if they have just changed their actions for TV.

Are people that old-fashioned that they really won't take "GOD" in vain?

Heres my personal favorite example of the censorship of the word "god".
I was watching The Ring on ABC, and the original line was "God d*amn", well they censored out "god", but not "d*mn"
Isn't it a wonderful world, you can say obsceneties on network TV, but you can't say "god"

Yes, a lot of people will say it if they're in the office or around a mix of people they don't know well. It's just common courtesy in case someone might be offended.

I don't say the phrase either way, but I think the younger you are, the more likely you are to say, "god."

Yes, some people still say that. I do, for the very reason you listed (not taking the name of God in vain).

A woman I work with says it once in awhile. She also says "fudge" instead of another 'f' word. But she is unique in my experience.

"Oh my GOSH" is used for the reason you mentioned.
