why don't they ban postal workers from going on strike instead? I'm sick to death of them.

Well truth is they should not be allowed to go on strike same with the police, fire departments, and so on. These are essential jobs we have to have these people and I myself am thankful for them. If they do not like what they are paid or how they are treated I say quit, and force them to find someone else to do it. We should be paying these people a lot, a whole lot more than we are!!! We should however demand more to they should have a college education, I don't care what in, but they should have one. They should also get the support of the Federal and State Governments. I mean here a policeman starts out at about 32,000 a year, I say they should start out at 45 to 50 thousand a year. Yes I know that's not a real big salary but it is a livable wage. We should also expect them to respond and be respectful of the citizens they serve, and if they are ever caught driving under the influence or using illegal drugs or test positive they should be fired, and that's that. The thing is these groups are needed along with parole and probation officers and so on. They should be taken care of and given good salaries. Yet like I said we should also expect more from them in their conduct. To many good honest hard working men and women are forced to take second jobs, just so their families can afford to live and that is shameful! I do not think these groups should be allowed to strike, just because they are needed so desperately. If they paid I would gladly join the police force, but how can one expect to raise a family on such a low wage. There has got to be a way to make our dumb politicians know and understand this, I wish I knew of a way.

I have no problem with the government blocking strikes in this situation. We have seen several situations where unions and strikes are not in the best interest of the employees or the agency/company they belong to. Examples: look at Toyota poised to bump Ford out of the number two spot for US sales while the UAW employees are making a combined total average of $75 per hour including retirement and benefits. There is absolutely no way they are worth this amount. Even with such high paid workers, foreign cars still have better reliability and resale value. I specifically bought a Japanese car to boycott the EMPLOYEES, not the company. Next lets take a look at Firestone, who's employees last year chose to strike just to make sure the company was aware they still could. There wasn't even any issues up for debate! If you aren't happy with your job, go somewhere else or go back to college, I did. There are always people waiting in line for a government job if you don't want it. This is especially true in law enforcement. If the prison has enough trouble keeping employees, they will re-evaluate their working conditions. Sorry to say it, but you don't get much sympathy from me.

i do not think a strike is what is needed. never believed in a strike. negotiations and mediation is what is needed. what is called binding arbitration.
in the old days you had civil service to back you up. some have unions nowadays. many have only the department.
there is no one to take the police, firefighters medics or correctional officers place. we know it and ask for a fair standard of living and current wage increases.
you can curtail working details with the blue flu. this is where officers 5-6 different officers each day /rotate calling in sick) call in of 5-6 is enough to keep the shift at a low level of officers to handle all the details because of shortages. thus everything gets backed up. works effectively with courts and judges who get paid 100,000 a year but want police to be paid blue collar 45,000 a year.
but this is not the administrations problem it is the legislatures and the head of the department to go out and get the raises needed to keep a work force and qualified help around.
to many times management looks at quantity and not quality. 3 good trained officers with 5-6 years experience can do the work of 5 but we are not going to do it every day for years because the administration is getting by with less officers and expect us to pick up the slack always.

With rising taxes and unaffordable homes I can't blame them. The Government has created misery for so many people, no wonder they are flexing their muscles.

we should get some Poles and Latvians in to do it on minimum wage and see how these whiners like that. If you work as a prison guard, it's because you didn't go to school. Get over it
