From a Christian website: http://www.foundationsforfreedom.net/Topics/Parenting/Parenting07_Discipline.html
Neighbors sometimes get concerned when they hear your child screaming. We have trained our children, especially the loud criers, to cover their mouths when they cry. It works!
Choose to discipline in private places that absorb sound. If you live in apartments, flats or condos, choose the room away from the halls and with more insulation like a rug. You might cover an air vent for the brief moment. Walk-in closets are great. Take him to a private place and discipline him. Sometimes it is helpful to take the child for a walk and hold his hand tightly so that it hurts.
Rulers break. They cost money. Switches have a nice swoosh sound. ...the rod can be struck against the backs of hands. Tell the child to place his hands down on a flat surface. The pain is equally distributed across the hand rather than focusing in on one spot. Spanking through thick pants is hard because o

It doesn't. It say's just the opposite at
Ephesians 6:4 " Fathers do not be irritating
your children, but go on bringing them up in the discipline and mental-regulating of Jehovah.
Although we hear in the scriptures " That the rod of discipline will take the foolishness out of a boy" . That does not necessarily mean to actually hit the child. The rod of discipline can mean to be more strict with a child who continues to go against what you are trying to teach them, rather than just some form of light punishment that the child may not pay any attention to.
You Will also notice in Chapter 6 verse 1 it says that children should be obedient to their parents in union with the Lord.
So children have a responsibility towards God to obey their parents at an age of understanding.
The entire book of Ephesians is dedicated
towards the family and the congregation, and who holds what responsibilities with in the Christian Congregation.
I think you will get a lot out of that book if you read it. You should get a copy of
" The New World Translation " as it will be translated in our modern day language so you can understand it more readily.
If you don't have one or can't find one I would be happy to send you a new copy free, no catches or obligations. I only send them to Avatar members.
Sincerely yours,
Fred M. Hunter

If you read the article from from the top on the website you get a better understanding why they are writing this. I think the author if giving how to handle a worst case scenario. Most children do not need this level of discipline.
Funny how you left out the part that says: "When parents discipline their children in anger, they create hostile children. The parent shouts, and the child shouts back. The parent hits; the child yells. This is not is desired."
If you are against spanking nothing the author could have wrote would change your stance.

I will agree that disciplining your child is upto the individual parent.. but yeah if I noticed someone using a ruler on a kid I would take it away and show them how it felt.. I remember over thirty yrs ago school teachers used them rulers and I had it used on me once and if I could have turned around and showed that teacher how it felt oh I would have enjoyed it .... If you use certain tones with children they usually wisen up that they are in hot waters.. I personally spanked my kids, nieces and nephews but I only had to do this once.. and in the future they would get a reminder that they didnt straighten up they would recieve one again. but that was usually after everything else didnt work...I know a judge that stated in a court case about using a belt on a six yr old and asked the mother if she needed a demostration..

You are blowing this out to be more then what it is.
Okay so what if instead of having a screaming kid in the store and being the parent that just starts to whop or yell. You take their hand and hold it tightly maybe just a fast squeeze and explain to them if they do not stop they will be in big trouble or that they cannot buy candy or something.
Okay so some ppl still whop their kids, that's their business. All they are doing is helping people whose kids are over dramatic, like the ones where when all you do is bump into them and they are on the floor like they died.
Some people believe in whips and rulers. I dont but some its all their prerogative as long as they aren't Beating the child it is not illegal. People have really gotten things messed up because there is a difference in a whoppin and a beating. I was whoped but never beat. I got beat up by other kids before so i know the difference.
You are misleading things about that site.

ok i just had a little laugh. i thought you were saying you do this! that is NOT right today! although, there were stories in the bible about children getting killed for disrespecting their parents. if that were true america would be screwed! but these people are SICK!!! they need to go to jail for that! THAT is abuse! hitting your kids on the butt with your hand, belt or wooden spoon is alright since it doesn't harm them, but using a rod is F*cked up! i'm 20 and i dont wanna get hit by a rod!

"SPARE THE ROD - SPOIL THE CHILD"
The bible says you CAN discipline the child but NOTHING about beating them!!!!!
Proverbs 23:13 (New International Version)
13 Do not withhold discipline from a child;
if you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

I don't get it. What are you trying to say? Do you know someone who does this to their children, because if you do, report them. If you did, (which I thought), you'd be an abusive monster who is BY NO MEANS a Christian at all.

I think a lot of the people who answered your question misread it completely. I know you're not saying that you do this, and you're just asking where it says in the Bible that it's ok to do this. I'm a Christian and I haven't come across anything myself.

What does your being a self-proclaimed "Christian" have to do with anything? Why do self-proclaimed "Christians" always feel a need to tell everyone that at every possible opportunity? I started referring to myself as a "Libran" to my constantly self-proclaiming "Christian" coworker the other day. You should have seen the look of intolerance on her face as she asked me what that meant.
