It USED to symbolize straight or gay, but it was mostly a rule for guys and earings. That was SOOO 80s (nose piercings = not SOO 80s)

now days it just doesn't matter. Its just a matter of where you think it will look better.

Some people suggest balancing things like; which side you part your hair on, your nostril and the hand that has the most jewelery

it is apparently a tradition for

Because they notice someone that has their nose pierced on the left and think, "Hmmm. That really looks stupid. I'll get mine pierced on the right side so I don't look stupid, too."

It is to do with the science of nose picking.

Most people are right-handed. You pick your nose with your right index finger and the angle of insertion from right hand to right nostril results in deeper penetration and thrust. (sexual innuendo intended) From right index finger to left nostril, the angle of insertion is more forgiving and more shallow penetration is a result. Putting the piercing on the left side (as a right handed person) is favorable for nose picking based on aperture of nostril vis a vis finger penetration. (Vice Versa for left handed persons)
