My granddaughter kept clicking the window air conditioner off and on, off and on, low and high, cool and just fan and she kept doing this. Now the air unit does nothing but hums. It is damaged. This is big window unit. This will be over $600. I did tell my daughter about it, but I didn't ask her to help me buy another one. Should I ??

My granddaughter will be 4 this month of October. She was over to visit me. It was just me and her here at my home. We were getting ready for church that morning. I went into the bathroom for about 2 or 3 minutes, and that is when she played with and destroyed the window air conditioner unit.

50/50 seems fair to me. Good lesson for everyone.

Depends on when your granddaughter destroyed it.

If your granddaughter was supposed to be under your supervision when it happened (ex. you were baby-sitting her), then you cannot ask your daughter to help buy another one. You were the responsible adult at fault. Otherwise, though, feel free to ask your daughter to help buy its replacement. Just don't be surprised if she refuses to help.

Also, you can always ask that your granddaughter pay for it or work the cost off doing chores because your granddaughter is ultimately the responsible party.

That seems only fair...

However, now that you've added more details, I would have to say that since your granddaughter was under your supervision at the time, not her mother's, then you are responsible for what she does. Unfortunately, I don't think it's fair to ask you daughter to pay for the AC unit since it was under your watch that it was broken...

Fair is fair.

it depends ,
were you babysitting your granddaughter or was your daughter there at the time??

If your daughter was there and allowed her child to fiddle with things and did not correct her , then she is responsible for her daughter and the damage done and she should buy a new one.

On the other hand, if you were babysitting, then you were responsible for watching her and should not have allowed her to fiddle with the switch- regardless of how old she is she needs intruction and discipline- whoever was responsible at the time for her instruction and discipline , whoever was responsible for watching out for her well being, is responsible for hte damage done to the air conditioner

more info please. Who was watching the granddaughter while she was messing up the a/c?... Was it your job to babysit that day?... if your Daughter was there and she ignored the grandaughter and allowed her to mess the a/c, then yes you should discuss this with her, or at least discuss the fact that you cant go and just purchase an a/c at a whim, maybe she could help in the expense, but if you were babysitting and you neglected to watch the child, then its your fault

I agree with Towanda,,,the person watching the child is responsible for that child's action,,children are naturally curious, they get themselves into all sorts of( innocent )trouble!

Perhaps she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.she may not be at fault at all, just there when it quit. sounds like the fan motor needs lubricating.Besides it's the price we pay for the good times.

Who was responsible for watching her when it was destroyed? That's who I would ask. . . If you think it will cause hard feelings, be sure it is worth it.

Yes I think so. You are not blaming her, but her daughter is her responsibility.
