I was working at this job some time ago and had to take a emergency leave from the job... considering this is a nice job and the boss was good to me i let him know exactly what was going on and reassured myself a job upon my return. Just like that when i returned to the area the former boss (took a couple months) got me right back into the same posiition with same pay. (good bosses are hard to find :) )... so now heres the scoop, while i was waiting to return to this job i was filling out applications to other companies that had good advancement oppertunities ( something my current job isnt able to offer ex. better pay, more hours, benifiets, and paid schooling to advance where i would like to be) .i have a interview to set up and am not sure if i should break the news before/after i landed this job, give a 2 week notice (which could work for or against me). any ideas? not really for burning either bridge... options are always nice to have. thanks in advance.

You say or do NOTHING until you have a firm offer.
Once you have a firm offer and decide to accept it, write a letter of resignation, giving 2 weeks notice. Not before

Always easier to get a job when you have a job. They should understand that you have to give at least two weeks notice. If they don't understand, don't go to work for them. Be sure that the perks are worth losing a good place to work and a good boss. They are hard to find. My sister finally changed jobs after working for someone in an awful office for years. She took a salary cut and has never been happier. She's very good at what she does and has been a great asset to the new office and so he has given her great bonuses at Christmas to make up for the pay cut. Plus she is gettingup there in years and has medical problems. He never says a word when she misses a day because she comes back and works until she is caught up. I've worked in many offices and do work where I end up working in other people's offices. Most are horrendous. I'd think it over pretty carefully.

Yes, good bosses are hard to find. It seems like you are pretty close to your boss. The best thing for you to do is to let your boss know what you are up to. Of why you are looking for a new job. Tell him that you love working with him but you need more benefits. Ask him for his suggestion. If he is really a good boss then he will understand and he will tell you to go try the other job. When you get a firm offer then you should give a 2 weeks notice. I know that it is hard to find good bosses, but, you also need to pay your bills. Having a good boss is wonderful but it won't pay your bills. Keep your boss in the loop.
