Okay, so I go to research your question and NOW I think I have a drinking problem! LOL ... I better go have a glass of wine :-)
Alcohol, Calories & Weight
Drinking alcohol does not contribute to weight gain, according to scientific medical research.
The Data
Alcohol contains calories, but drinking alcohol doesn't lead to weight gain, according to extensive medical research, and many studies report a small reduction in weight for women who drink.
The reason that alcohol doesn't increase weight is unclear, but research suggests that alcohol energy is not efficiently used. Alcohol also appears to increase metabolic rate significantly, thus causing more calories to be burned rather than stored in the body as fat. Other research has found consumption of sugar to decrease as consumption of alcohol increases.
Whatever the reasons, the consumption of alcohol is not associated with weight gain and is often associated with weight loss in women. The medical evidence of this is based on a large number of studies of thousands of people around the world. Some of these studies are very large; one involved nearly 80,000 and another included 140,000 subjects.
Alcohol beverages contain no fat, no cholesterol, and very little sodium. Of course, the nutritional value of different alcohol beverages varies.
The moderate consumption of alcohol is associated with better health and longer life than is either abstaining from alcohol or abusing alcohol. However, the health benefits of drinking are associated with moderation [learn more about Alcohol and Health]. On the other hand, heavy drinking is associated with cirrhosis of the liver, breast cancer, and other health problems. The key word is moderation!

I suggest you avoid drinking beer after every meal if you DON'T want to gain weight (carbs = beer gut).
Now, Vodka on the other hand...that's your best bet to avoid gaining weight. Drink a shot of vodka after every meal, and your tolerance will be built up in no time, and you won't have a huge gut to show for it.

I don't think it makes a difference when you eat or drink it. The thing is the total calories. I work out like an A-Lister but always look like a "You're not on the list" er.
I think with all the new diets they don't really cover the age-old fact of calories consumed versus calories burned. I'm not a nutritionist though.
I personally prefer to drink my calories as opposed to eating them.

After a big meal, it's hard to stick with beer.
A good (measured out) vodka, is the way to go.
Mix it with a no calorie drink such as sprite zero and water. (Half and Half).
Can't get much less calories than that. Plus you can still get a buzz on.

Alcohol is a depressant. It slows your metabolism so you don't burn as many calories from normal movement. The carbs from the drinks don't help either.
