The carpet is rather dated, and my roommates cat tore a couple holes in the stuff also. Would giving the buyers (if I ever find any) credit towards getting any color new carpet they want better than installing a color they might not like?

Anything but leave the old carpeting. Your place will not show well and that's the name of the game. However, no matter what color you pick, they will not like it. I would refinish the wood floors but be sure you know what you are doing. Leave large sanding jobs to professionals. If you have good hardwood floors underneath, they are worth a fortune if you can get them looking good. However if you have some of the newer thinner floors, you may want to think about refinishing. Talk to a few professionals and get a good idea about what you are about to do and then weigh your decision.

The floors under neath are probably gorgeous. Or will be when they are refinished. It would probably be a lot cheaper to have tehm refinished than installing new carpet. Hardwood seems to be a much more up to date look as well as keeping in tact the origional beatuy of the older home.

If you have hard wood underneath i would try to revamp it!! you could save alot of money instead of buying carpet and the buyers dont like it. From my understanding wood has more value than carpet anyway. I think that it would be a plus to have the wood. It might even change your luck with buyers. especially if you put a fresh coat of paint that compliments it.

I would leave credit to the new buyers- they might want carpet or might even decide to use the money to refinish the hardwood!!

OK , take up the old carpet, and re do the floors,
old carpet looks old, re done flooring , looks cool, bigger
and is a good selling point,
dont make it perfect, better if it looks old,
forget the credit ,issue , they want $5,000 for new carpet ?
you want to give them $1,500, see my point?
you lost the sale .......
if you use a light stain, the place will look bigger,
