I'm asking for a honest answer. No raving please. Reason for question:
Rules of Nascar??? they all seem to be gray to me and only enforced on a whim and depending on driver
Point system??? you KNOW (alot of the time, but not always) who the champ is gonna be BEFORE the end of the season
Bush series??? That's mainly nextel drivers warming up for Sunday's race.
Chase contenders having to actually contend with every driver, even tho they not be in the chase? Only so many drivers are contending for the championship but their points are based on ALL drivers??? That's like having a playoff system where are teams get to play and hurt the actual contenders, even tho they can't play in the superbowl..
So please, I honestly want to know,,,,how is considered a sport/enjoyable/or even entertaining?

Beth: Apparently you can NOT read. I ask WHY YOU consider nascar a sport, or enjoyable, NOT IF it is a sport. Try re-reading the question.

Beth:...ONCE MORE FIRST WORD OF QUESTION IS WHY,,,,WHY...

no wonder nascar makes zero sense if you are a prime example of their fan base.

And still no answer to the question. I guess that means you don't have a defense for the stupidity of nascar.

David,,,I do not deny that it is a sport, only want to know why it is classified as a sport given the reasons I gave in the question, and also based on what my observations, why is it enjoyable to you. I know and understand that everyone has their own reasons. I am just trying to get answers that may help me understand my hubbys awe of nascar, cause the only thing he can say is: 'I like it."

Well, I used to consider it an adult beverage/erotic, but my American friends told me that didn't make any sense. Then I tried considering it a religious ritual/coniferous. But that didn't work either.

Finally it occurred to me to consider it a sport/enjoyable! At last, a label/adjective that made sense! I was well chuffed, let me tell you!

Your emotional reactions to any form of entertainment are of course your own concern. SOME people actually like to watch grown men playing children's games with inflated rubber balls, can you imagine? But if you find a category into which auto racing fits better than "sports," please let us know.

Edit: You listed only one valid reason to question NASCAR racing's being considered a legitimate sport: that the rules are whimsical and arbitrary. I don't think the situation is as bad as it appears lately; the rules are solid, it's their interpretation that is sometimes inconsistent. Keep in mind, though, that the officials often have very little time in which to make decisions. It's little different from ball sports: games and matches of all kinds have been won or lost because of referees' bad calls. Fans grumble and go on watching.

The question of 'Why do you like NASCAR' comes up at least twice a week here. For me, it's the racing: the hard-fought on-track competition, the daring moves, the split-second finishes. Search this board and you'll find other replies.

As much as I want to give you a straight answer it is not simple. No raving,OK but you did that in your question.
Stockcar racing is a common mans sport. He finds a hero who he may have seen race at his hometown local track. Now the driver is big league. So he the fan feels a bond with the driver and sport.
Grant it that racing is boring for the average person, but a fan of any sport finds their sport as the best and a non fan finds it boring.I get bored watching a football game, why because a major school plays a minor school for a win what sport(yes I know there have been upsets but this is a fluke).Baseball is a geopolitical game.Who has the most money to buy the biggest name taking less steroids.
I have been a stockcar/NASCAR fan since 1960,I was an avid follower of coach Paul"Bear" bryant and was there his last game.I played rookie league baseball and took a shot at free agency but failed my bid for it.
So it don't matter what sport or what event you like there will always be someone with the negitve thoughts for it.So if I have the chance on Saturday night between tickets for an Alabama Football game sitting on the 50 yardline or a seat in turn 4 at a stockcar race I'll be at the race.It is my choice and I'm sticking with it.

When you asked this question didn't the little phrase pop up that said this question has been asked a thousand times, even once before in this hour?

Carmelia, I apologize for being a bit testy but we get this question 2 times a day, the same question whether you rephrase it or not it is still the same. Did you read the answers to the last time it was asked 5 lines down? There is no difference between "How is (it) considered a sport" or "is it a sport?"

In order to answer your question, the way you put it in the details, one would have to agree with you that the outcome is fixed.
It seems that you are basing your opinion on what you read from conspiracy theorists. Auto racing--not just NASCAR--is something that you either get or don't get. If you get it, you get it, if you don't, you don't and you never will.
