Well, first of all understand that IAD is not close to DC and there is no subway there at this point. You can take a city bus from IAD to Rosslyn or L'Enfant Plaza for just a few dollars, but it takes an hour to an hour and a half, and you can take the Washington Flyer Bus to West falls church for a little under $10, plus a few dollars subway fare. This will take an hour, as will driving if you rent a car, plus you'll have $12 to $20 of parking and transport depending on where you park.

If you are doing three days in Washington, I strongly encourage you to make reservations downtown and skip having a car. IAD is no place to stay to visit downtown. If affordability is an issue, think of staying at the Hotel Harrington or the Red Roof in downtown, which are relatively inexpensive downtown hotels.

Once downtown, the federal buildings, like the Library of Congress, Capitol, and Archives are all free, the Smithsonian is free, and the monuments and memorials are all free - so take the time to see them, and your tourism will be very inexpensive.

That said, if you are looking for a quick layover activity from the airport I have two pieces of advice - one is, returning back through security, and getting back and forth from the gate takes an unusually long period of time at Dulles, I usually arrive an hour and twenty minutes before a domestic flight and two and a half hours before an international one, when I must travel via Dulles (I prefer National).

Secondly, for 75 cents you can take a public bus from the airport to the National Air and space Museum's new Udvar Hazy Center, which is located adjacent to the airport. It takes only about 15 or 20 minutes, and there is more than enough stuff to keep you busy for a few hours, if you are trying to fill a long layover.

Smithonian Museums are always great and Free. Walk around Adams Morgan, Georgetown. You can also go to Baltimore, its just 20-25 minutes north of DC. Catch a hockey game, shop at outlet malls. Madam Tousseau wax museum just opened in DC a couple of weeks ago, I've heard its great. Check out Hard Rock Cafe in DC or in Baltimore's inner harbor, cool place is the harbor. Good luck!

Also, drive to Annapolis (25 minutes east of DC). Walk around the Naval Academy.
