I had a German Shepherd Dog that got out and ran down the street and I couldn't find her but she came back within an hr. Some breeds of dogs seem to have a propensity to get out and run off and keep running and get lost.
Some get picked up by a person who will hopefully seek the owner or will look to see if the owner is searching for the dog.
Your best bet would be to put up signs in your neighborhood, at Vet offices in your area, at Grocery stores that have bulletin boards. Some shops may allow you to post a flyer in their window.
Call the City pound and any animal shelters in your area. Place an ad in a local newspaper with a description of your dog. Sometimes it helps to add that he is on medication (even if he isn't) which will make a person think twice about keeping her and offer a REWARD which will make a person more likely to return her to you.
Google for online lost and found pet sites.
When you find your dog, and I hope you will, update the sites, take down the flyers, signs. Hoping he comes back to you.

My boy got out a 2 times. Both times with his female companion Star a very big, red nosed golden pit. Anyway, I drove for hours and hours. Friends too. I was so worried because we live in a very hilly open land area that if he got to chasing a bird out in the weeds, he was gone. Over the hill to the backside of nowhere... He does not know about snakes. I was sooo sick. I prayed and prayed for him to come home. He went missing early in the morning. After driving all day and posting signs, it was dusk and I was frantic. Completely nuts. Angry because the roommate left the side gate open. Really worried that this time he might not come back. I went home and cried. Just sick. Then I got the call. It was about 6:30pm and some guy called. Said my boy was there with a female pit - they'd been there all day, but my boy wouldn't let him approach him to get the phone number off his tag until just now! Which was so strange. My boy is very friendly but the pit isn't. [She had no collar on] I was so relieved and excited and so thankful. I had a hell of a time finding the place. New construction at the top of a hill with no driveway. The weird this was, he had at least 4 tags on his collar. Rabies, license, and 2 name and owner info tags. All of them were ripped off his collar. All except the 1 owner info tag I placed separate from the others on the other side of the collar on it's own ring. Check your local shelters. Post signs. Pray. [There was a tag on the collar, right??] Good luck. I will pray for you.

My golden ran away 2 days before we were going to move to another town. She was prone to running off with neighbors because she was really friendly. Turns out the people that found her put an add in the paper, and we went to get her 15 minutes before we left. They were actually really reluctant to give her up, but she was definitely anxious to come home. The only reason she hadn't already is that they were keeping her there until they found us. Dogs know where home is. That's where they get their food and love. Usually when they get hungry they come back around.
It's hard, I know. Hopefully your dog is at the very least licensed. When it returns, it might be a good idea to get it microchipped for the future if it is not already.

Has your dog been microchipped? If so, someone may take him/her to a vet or shelter, and you will be contacted if the contact info that is on the chip is still correct. If he is not chipped, you need to have a picture of your dog, post flyers everywhere, keep going into the local shelters and leave your flyer posted there, put an ad in the lost/found of the classified and offer a reward, also put a lost/found ad on Craigs list. Good luck.

For future reference, it would be a good idea to make up posters with the dogs picture up before they run away.. (again.. ) Just keep a few in a file.. I keep mine with the vet receipts and stuff.. That way I don't have to waste time.. the last time mine got out (last fall I think) I started putting them up as I was looking for him.. good thing too, the lady that picked him up noticed the sign while on her way to work at like 3 am and called me on my cell phone.. told me where he was. If the sign weren't up yet she would not have noticed for another 6 hours or so.. and I would have called out of work. That was a strange day though.. Apparently the cats were fighting and one of them got pushed through the screen.. (the one cat that is afraid of everything), and my dog went out to find it.. but being a beagle/basset mix he got bored of that and found other interesting smells to track.. someone picked him up within minutes.. called animal control with his license number, called the house (where no one was home) and decided to bring him back to the house.. they put him on his run.. but with the way he is built he can pull his collar off.. The loose skin will forces him to choke if I tighten it.. (even the vet tried).. They left him and.. off he went again.. this time with no collar.. He didn't get much farther than the before though.. the lady that called said she picked him up across the street from the house..

Don't you think you should be looking for your dog? Call the police, call the animal shelters, make up posters to put up at the grocery stores, pet stores, vets office. It doesn't sound as though you think he's gone, I wouldn't be calmly posting a question on YA if my dog had run off. Hope you dog comes back safely.

Yes, several times. The darn dog goes down the street to play with the Lab and visit with the neighbors. I have to bring him home, he's got a thing about going to after rattle snakes and will root for them.
PLEASE tell us that he's tagged with at least an email address...
You need to take a picture of your buddy to local shelters and vet offices to post, JUST IN CASE he turns up. If he's chipped make sure that you advise the shelters at that time. There are two varieties of m-chips, one US standard and the other is a Euro standard. Most shelters only check for the US Standard (of course) even if they have the euro type.
Go online to lost pet sites and post there as well. Get a copy of his rabies tag and keep it handy for when he's located.
Quit hanging out here and get it together to find him. He is your responsibility. Don't count on his making his way home on his own.
Good luck and get to hunting, amigo.

My dog has never ran away. But I work at a vet clinic, and one day a lady came in with a Lost Dog Flyer with a picture of her dog, and she asked us to hang it up. About 10 minutes later a man walked in, saw the flyer and said, "Hey! I just found that dog last night, she is at my house!" So he called the number, and gave the lady her dog. Just keep asking around and talk to animal shelters, vet clinic, and hang up flyers. Good Luck, I hope you find your dog soon!!!

While I was at work there was a terrible thunderstorm. My dog panicked and chewed his way through a window screen and ran away. He was gone when I got home. I spent HOURS looking for him. I lived in a very urban neighborhood at that time, with tons of roads and traffic everywhere. The next day I went door to door, telling EVERYONE about my dog, showing his picture and giving my phone number and address to anyone who would take it. I stopped at hundreds of houses... but it worked.
Later that day while I was still out looking for him a woman drove up to me and said she had my dog in her car. I don't know who was happier -- my dog or me!! It was a fabulous reunion.
She told me that she didn't live in my neighborhood but that she'd been visiting her daughter when I knocked on the door and remembered what my dog looked like and where I lived. Later, on her way home, she was driving IN THE NEXT TOWN and she saw my dog cross a BUSY street and go behind a building. She ran after him and -- thank goodness -- he came to her and got into her car. Then she drove him to my house but I wasn't home so she went looking for me...
He was gone more than 24 hours and he traveled MILES. I don't know how he managed to avoid being hit by cars.
So if your dog is still missing tomorrow my advice is GET THE WORD OUT. Make up flyers, contact vets, call the shelters and pounds, get friends to help search for him. And don't stop looking for him -- he is depending on you to bring him home.
Best of luck to you -- and please let us know when you find him, OK?

No, but my dog was stolen out of my yard by some kids in 1989, Dec 12, he was wearing his santa suit, my rottie back then did nothing (he knew NEVER to hurt a child). They stole my little schipperke, I found out WHO months later after searching and signs, checking shelters daily, etc. They gave him away after a month, because he kept climbing their trees and eating off the table...JERKS!!!
He had been taught to climb and he had his own plate at my table, I was single then and he was my little boy. His favorite food was fettucini alfredo with chicken and broccoli, he would sit there and wait, then eat all of it. I know better than to feed my dogs "people" food, but back then, he was my little dude and I would let him have special dinn dinn sometimes...
Hope yours comes back soon, don't give up!! and have him chipped with AVID microchip. Back then they didn't have them or Adam would have been chipped and hopefully returned...I had put up flyers at all the local vet's too...
