Honestly, I would never vote for somebody who had to go to Yahoo Answers to ask this question. It shows incredible lack of problem-solving skills.

Check with your Supervisor of Elections Office. The Supervisor of Elections in my County lists all elected offices along with links to the qualifications to run in an election for each office.

Along with attending the meetings for local Political Parties that was already mentioned; I'd recommend attending meetings of local governing bodies (City Council, County Commission, School Boards, Water Boards, Code Boards, etc)...or watching these meetings on television. You could also work with a group that advocates for issues you are interested in, to gain experience working on public policy. I can't imagine running for office without some idea of what that public office should do.

Available local offices open for election can be determined by consulting your county commission, city hall or state legislature clerks. Qualifications will come with the documentation you request. Getting the process started would begin by glad-handing around community leaders, giviing your intended goals, and setting up a campaign bank account. You'd request speaking engagements with civic groups, to start fund-raising.

i think a great way to go is to visit your local republican or democrat or independent meeting in your township. you will hear speakers and can sit near many local politicians. just watching and attending will give you a different perspective. you can then carve a path if you wish.

Probably a better place to start would be a vision of what you want to accomplish as a public servant.
