Everywhere the Israelites went, they had to take the Ark Of The Covenant with them to symbolize their hope and trust in God. Bringing the Ark of the Covenant with them was like having God in their midst.

The enemy Philistines recognized the presence of God when the Ark appeared on the battlefield. In their fright they cried out: “God has come into the camp of Israel!” “Woe to us, for such a thing as this never occurred before! Woe to us! Who will save us from the hand of this majestic God? This is the God that was the smiter of Egypt with every sort of slaughter in the wilderness.”—1Samual 4:6-8.
