Clue #3 - Bob sat in seat 3, so Gavin sat in seat 7.
Clue #2 - Doug sat three seats to Joe's left hand side. This means Joe was in seat 4 or in seat 5. Doug was in seat 1 or in seat 8.
Clue #4 - Bill sat to the right of Doug. If Doug was in seat 1 or seat 8, then Bill is in seat 2 or seat 7. But Gavin was in seat 7, so Bill has to be in seat 2. If Bill is on Doug's right, then Doug is on Bill's left - in seat 1.
Clue #2 - Since Doug is in Seat 1, then Joe is three seats to his right in Seat 4.
Clue #4 - Since Bill is in Seat 2, then Alex is in Seat 6.
Clue #1 - Since Dan is diagonal from Joe, and Joe is in Seat 4 - the only seat left for Dan is Seat 1.
The only empty seat now is Seat 8. The only person mentioned in the beginning of the story, who is also not mentioned in the clues, is Jim. Therefore, Jim is in Seat 8.
