This might sound dumb, but when you set a table does the fork really go on the left?

From left to the right, salad fork, dinner fork, center -dinner plate, butter knife with the edge turned towards the dinner plate, tablespoon, teaspoon.( traditional place-setting), your napkin can be on the right of the plate, or in the center( dinner-plate ), center: charger( optional ), dinner-plate,( in-layers) salad plate, desert plate/bowl (top-center). Just remember...small to large to small. Don't worry, now-a-days, anything goes!

Traditionally, the fork goes on the left. This is because in most places, diners use the fork in their left hand and the knife in their right. However, in other places, the fork is used in the right hand.

Here's a useful guide to table settings for more formal occasions which should answer most questions. It is specific to American dining, so should cover most questions about the way things are usually done in the US:

Good luck with your function :-)

Yes and the spoons go on the right. We just went to a wedding over the weekend and had 2 spoons and 3 forks to deal with !!

Yes, on the left. And, (just incase you wanted to be really fussy) the blade of the knife should always point inwards (ie towards the fork and plate) not at other dinner guests.

All forks on left (except the shrimp aka cocktail fork, it goes across the top of the dinner plate or in the dish shrimp is served in (cocktail shrimp, of course.) Knives go closest to plate on the right and then the spoons. (Except the butter knife, it goes across the top of the bread plate.)

Yes it goes on the left, because the knife is on the right and that is so you can cut your food without looking like a hillbilly
