I have the Adobe design pro set of programs at my school and I am curious what each one is designed for, so the programs are, illistrator, photoshop, indesign, flash, and dreamweaver, and some flash video encoder....
alright, maybe like just tell me what they were designed to do, and the differences and like an example of each thing...
THANKS!

Illustrator is for drawing your own illustrations from scratch. I haven't tried it before, but I suppose it's more suitable for illustrating your own art than Photoshop, though I do use that one frequently.

Photoshop is, although you can still do drawing on it, more for editing photographs or manipulating a predetermined render. It is a very powerful tool and i know this from experience.

Flash allows you to make animated gifs, flash videos, etc. Basically makes moving images or even games, movies, clips. This could involve some coding as you get more advanced.

Dreamweaver is for webpage design, and it can let you design your own page visually, meaning that you don't actually have to understand HTML and css etc. But you CAN. So Dreamweaver supports different kinds of methods.

And for Indesign I think it's mainly for posters, newspaper, magazine, book covers, and other kinds of printed media.

Illiustrator is not like Word. Illustrator is a vector based drawing program. Meaning it is designed for you to make logo and such in a manner that allows them to be shrunk or blown up to huge sizes and still be the same quality. There are more uses for all these but in a nutshell here they are:

Illustrator - Vector based-design
Photoshop - Editing photos, creating montages, many many things
Indesign - for making magazine layouts, flyers, brochures, books, etc. It is designed to create many pages and layout the whole document. As a designer, I spend most of my print design work in this program.
Flash - the next wave of internet use. It is for creating animations, games, full-motion ads, etc. All with full-interactive use.
Dreamweaver - the standard for building websites. It's what you use to layout the website in html if you aren't going strictly in Flash.
the Flash video encoder is just for the Flash player.

My suggestion is that you use Photoshop for all your images as photoshop allows you the most flexibility when creating images whether they be for a logo, text, website, or whatever. The reason why is because when you create an image in photoshop you can start your image out as a vector image so that it can be re-sized without loosing much image quality then rasterize it for digital use when you are finished. When you create the image in layers, the layers automatically start out as a vector image, with the exceptions of photo images like jpegs and using when using the basic brush or pencil tool. I have managed to find a way to import my images created in photoshop into all the programs you mentioned above except for InDesign, mainly just because I haven't really used InDesign. For your navigation bar images I would suggest that you create the image in photoshop and then import them into fireworks as fireworks makes creating roll over navigation bars really simple.
