Because fear is the most productive tool these mind control cults have to win over and keep followers.
Source(s):
Remember, "god" is nothing more than a nonsense word created by man to explain away all of the things we can't yet understand.

Religion is a disease of the mind, born of fear, which has done nothing but bring untold misery down upon the human race.
If you can't get someone to convert willingly through preaching, fear is the next best tool.

Christianity for instance is based on two principles:

1. If you believe, you will be rewarded with the prospect of an eternity in Heaven when you die.

2. If you don't believe, you will be rewarded with the prospect of an eternity in Hell when you die.

For Christians:

God is all-loving, all-wise and all-merciful, so long as you submit to becoming a slave - salivating and singing heaps of praises on him for all eternity.

Much like an Earthly dictator who rules his subjects under rule of tyranny - submit or suffer

I believe certain ways that Christianity is used could be considered a FEAR based religion. There are other ways to interpret Christianity such as not to judge others, live thru Jesus(meaning live a life of compassion and forgiveness) rather than only people who know Jesus are going to go to hell(now that's FEAR based), love your neighbor as you love yourself. I believe that extremists and fundamentalists are addicted to thinking they are right in their beliefs and that it is their responsibility to convert the rest of humanity or condem them all to hell. For my faith, I like to look at the Bible as a book written thousand of years ago by "men" so there are some parts that are a bit extreme, entertaining, flat out wrong or not applicable in today's world, and some parts with actual good messages. I believe that fundamentalist take the wrong messages and twist them around. If you look at certain parts of the Bible, it says homosexuality is wrong, but in the same book it says eating pigs as well as birds(omg chicken? turkey? ooo..i know those fat pastors love their bacon) is wrong too(Leviticus 19:27). Sex outside of marriage is wrong? There were may references to concubines in the Bible(King David, Abraham, Solomon). I believe that some ways that Christianity is presented would be a FEAR based religion; however, if you take my stance which is the Bible is not to be taken word for word, and take out one of the main msgs being "love your neighbor as thyself" "do not judge others" "live thru Jesus"(by being compassionate and forgiving).

Here's something intersting I found on the Web:
What Would Jesus Do?"

Indeed, what would Jesus do? Would he support Fundamentalist extremism or would he spread love and forgiveness? Would he dump on homosexuals, or would he fight for their rights as human beings? Would he picket abortion clinics, or would he comfort a woman in need of such a procedure? Would he be complaining about alcohol or would he be drinking it with his friends?

oh yea, another intersting site that you might find interesting which shows the violence and pornography that is present in the Bible but not really advertised that much:

"Much like an Earthly dictator who rules his subjects under rule of tyranny - submit or suffer"

Precisely.

Which begs the question, Why would any one willingly submit to a dictator? Not just a dictator but a megalomaniacal genocidal infanticidal blood thirsty war mongering psychopath?

Kris, do you really want to be an antichrist?

1 John 2:22 - Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

Your knowledge of Christianity lacks understanding.

So, I disagree.

Totally disagree. In varying terms and forms, Jesus is quoted over 300 times telling us to not fear.

Absolutely, big carrot, big stick. (heaven, hell)

I cannot respect an individual that would be submissive to such tyranny. I respect their right to choose to and I defended that right with my service to the country.. but I will not respect the person.

I guess you haven't read our bible. From the Old Testament to the New you'll find the theme "mercy, love, forgiveness." Philippians 4:8-9 is something for you to think about.
