Try watching Lock Up: San Quentin on A&E. It will show you why they have this attitude.

It is to survive life in prison. Prison is worse than being on the streets.

I am a corrections officer for the Kansas department of corrections. From what I have noticed is that the attitude depends on the age of the inmate. Younger inmates (18-30) are not willing to accept what they did to go to prison, and they tend to be the more aggressive. The younger inmates are also more likely to violate parole, as they are not willing to accept responsibility for anything, they are pretty much just punk thugs. The middle aged inmates, are more willing to accept and admit to crimes, however they are also still agressive, and more likely to be a shot caller for gangs. The older inmates normally keep to themselves and try to complete there sentance as quietly as possible. Is this what you were looking for?

PRISON ATTITUDE?
TOUGH GUYS? GANG MEMBERS, HOMOSEXUALS, RELIGIOUS GROUPS??

MOST ADOPT THE ATTITUDE THEY WANT TO PORTRAY. IN A PRISON YOU HAVE TO BE TOUGH, JUST TO SURVIVE, THEY PREY UPON THE WEAKER ONES.
YOU HAVE TO BELONG TO A GROUP FOR PROTECTION.
OVER THE 42 YEARS I HAVE BEEN IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, THERE HAVE BEEN BIG CHANGES. WHEN I STARTED IT WAS THEM AND US. NOW IT IS US. YOU HAVE AN INMATE FOR 15 YEARS WHO WORKS IN THE PRISON ON MAINTENANCE AND IS ON CALL TO FIX PLUMBING PROBLEMS. YOU GET THE TOOLS AND WATCH HIM AND THE TOOLS(TOURCHES, WRENCHES, SCREWDRIVERS ETC) YOU CANNOT HELP BUT BECOME A FRIEND IN A WAY. IT IS LIKE GOING TO WORK ANYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT THEY CANNOT GO OUT AND PLAY BALL WITH YOUR TEAM. YOU GO HOME AND THEY STAY THERE.
PRISON ATTITUDE? ODD TO DESCRIBE NOW A DAYS.
I TEACH A GED CLASS AND THEY ALL WANT TO LEARN. NO TOUGH GUYS HERE BUT THEY ARE, NO GED NO RELEASE.

you plan on going to prison?
It's not an attitude as it is a mind set. To make it one must adapt.
