If it's a wedding ring, it should be worn after the wedding. If he chose to get an engagement ring, then he could wear that beforehand, but this is not typical, so many would probably just assume it was a wedding ring. If he wanted to do this, there is a tradition where I grew up overseas (in Cyprus) for both the bride and groom: the wedding rings were worn on the right ring finger during the time of engagement, then were switched to the left ring finger at the wedding.

Some men feel less masculine with a ring on.
Others simply lose them over the course of a long life and its not polite to "simply buy a new one".
Think of it... if you get a wedding band at age 20 and live to 87, you've managed to keep track of a small metal band for 67 years. The odds are, it'll be lost or destroyed somewhere along the way.
My father lost his, swimming in a lake. Didnt matter... they're still married and going on 59 years of it :)

History of Wedding Rings and Bands
The wedding ring on a hand of a person symbolizes the person is in husband and wife relationship. This symbol and tradition has a long far back history. It started with ancient Egyptians, seeing the circular band (today's wedding ring) representing eternity and love, endless devotion, with no beginning and no end. Even the ring hole has the meaning of a door to events known and unknown for two committed to each other

Wedding bands for men are a fairly recent innovation. Throughout history, men have been dominant and either owned wives or lead harems. There was no need for men to be burdened by symbols of marriage and commitment. Even after modern thinking outlawed all forms of slavery and polygamy, the fingers of men were still unadorned. All of that changed during World War II. During the war it became fashionable for men to wear bands to remind them of the loving wives waiting back home. Use of wedding rings by men increased again during the Korean War. Today, most men wear wedding bands, regardless of military status

Second wedding question of the night, whoot!
Wedding bands of all sorts are traditional. Mainly objects that are round in shape and symbolize "never ending" mariage. Wedding rings became common for both man and woman to wear whenever the tradition started in certain cultures. Not all cultures have wedding bands though.
But of course, it is the spouse's choice whether or not to wear the ring. My parents sometimes take off their rings. It's just sorta normal...

To answer the question of "Why wouldn't a man wear a wedding ring?" When I was a child on the farm, my uncle and I were going out to bring in the cows for milking. We vaulted over the fence, but his wedding ring caught on the fence and pulled the flesh right off. He had to have it amputated. I was right behind him when it happened. Since then, I have had a phobia about wearing rings. I have a wedding band and wear it when we go out, but am not comfortable with it on. My wife understands, especially after she met my uncle and heard the story from him. I wish I could wear it, but I just can't.

I haven't seen many married men not wearing wedding rings and I think the egyptian theory is probably quite true. However, you must bear in mind that until fairly recently men did most of the manual labour, and rings can be hazardous in those situations. I knew a electrician who never wore one, and I don't see many mechanics with them on either...

If a ring is worn for a long period of time blood flow to the finger would be blocked. Wedding band is probably more elastic and allows for blood to flow.

My understanding is that it become common place in the USA during WW2. Men wore them prior to that, but it wasn't super common.
