Plaintains when they are yellow are super sweet. In Panama (my mom's home country) when they are still a bit unripe they will fry them and add a bit of salt for flavoring and it tastes pretty good. With the sweet way it can be cooked in butter and is a good side item for meals that are super salty.
When I was going to get training in the computer field about 10 years ago one of the teachers came to school with a plaintain. She bought it because she thought it was a banana. She tried to peel it so she could eat it and couldn't. One of the other teachers had to tell her that she had a plaintain.

Plaintains are about as sweet as a yam or sweet potato. They are compared with bananas quite frequently but I don't think you would enjoy eating them like you eat bananas.
In Latin America, people actually peel them completely and slice them up and fry them. Most of my Mexican friends tell me they actually fry them in butter.
We are told that Platano translates into banana, but Plaintains are only a part of the same family. They share qualities with bananas and potatoes.
Try them fried as I suggested. Also, Plaintains are much larger than bananas.
Good luck

The sweetest plantains are the really really ripe one, ones that look dark an the outside. You could prepare plantains in several ways.Green ones are usually fried while ripe(or sweet) could be microwaved or boiled and mashed. While it may look like plantains are bananas they are actually a vegetable and can't be eaten raw.

I love plantains! They can be very sweet. I like them a little overripe. You have to cook them first!
Try frying them and dip in sugar. Yummy

Plantains have to be cooked before they can be eaten.Ripe plantains are slightly sweet. Green ones taste starchy.
