Lemonprotection, you need a new profession bud! Used Car Lemon Laws are rare and the only state that even comes close to your evaluation is California. Why pose as a Lemon Expert when indeed you are not. People come here looking for advice and the last thing they need is for someone like to to misinform them.
To answer your question, purchasing private party involves NO LEMON LAWS in any state. If you singed the bill of sale 'as is', then it will be your word against theirs and you will most likely loose if it went to court. If the seller put something in writing that was not true, for instance if they signed the car had a new motor and falsified receipts, then you have a case. Otherwise, I'm sorry.

You can sue anyone for anything. The question is can you win the suit. You also have to remember that they can counter sue you if you do not have a good case!!
If you bought a car from a private party, it is assumed to be AS-IS, unless you have it in writing to the contrary!
If you bought it from a dealer, check your paperwork. If it was sold AS-IS, you have no case! If it was sold with a warranty and the defect is in a covered component, then they should fix it!
You should have had the car checked out by your own mechanic prior to purchase.

^Lemon law only applied for NEW CARS!
It all depends on the agreements you made when you bought it. Did you sign anything that would guaranty satisfaction? You can sue them if you can prove that they knew about the defect before they sold it to you.

I am a Lemon Law technical expert. Lemon Law applies to all cars sold by dealerships and car lots used or new.
You do have rights by law if someone sold you a car with defects that can potentially cause harm, safety issues SRS light on, ABS light on and Engine light on may be a smog issue and can not be sold legally. If the vehicle was in an accident and not disclosed you can contact the law firm for help.
Good Luck and God Bless

if its a used car ,you have to be able to prove that they did this knowing it was bad,and the law still will be on the sellers side, because all used cars are sold as is,there is no warranty on use cars, from individuals, even on used cars from a dealer their usually sold as is,so you,ll have a really hard time with this one,im sorry you got a bad deal, but it happens every day, until the law changes on this ,your more than likely stuck with it,good luck ,maybe you can repair it,and get some good driving from it,hopefully you will.
