Jesus Himself said he came not to save the righteous but sinners. We are all sinners, yet He said He didn't come to save the righteous. Who then, are the righteous that He need not save?

This verse is actually a wonderful verse that shows the heart of our Lord Jesus toward sinners.
The context of the Lord speaking this was in this setting...
Matthew 9 :9-13
And as Jesus passed on from there He saw a man sitting at the tax office called Matthew and He said to him, Follow Me. And he rose up and followed Him

And as He was reclining at table in the house behold many tax collectors and sinners came and reclined together with Jesus and His disciples

And when the PHARISEES saw it they said to His disciples. Why does your Teacher eat with the tax collectors and sinners.

Now when He heard this He said Those who are strong have no need for a physican but those who are ill

But go and learn what this means, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice" for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.

The Lord Jesus was addressing the Self Righteous ones who thought that they were superior to these Tax collectors and sinners.
Matthew, who was one of the tax collectors was also called Levi and was called by the Lord. He became one of the 12 apostles.
According to Romans 3:10.. "There is none righteous, not even one" .. All the " righteous " are the Self Righteous, such as the Pharisees.

Luke 18:9 is an interesting verse..
" And He told this parable also to certain ones who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised the rest"

These are the Self Righteous Pharisees.
In the Book of Matthew.. our Kingly Savior did not come to call these .. but the sinners.

Really Good Question

I've gone to a Catholic school for 9 years, and I've always been told this: Jesus came to Earth to save sinners, and yes since we are all sinners he came to save us all, and open the gates to Heaven. I've never heard of "the righteous'

Christine,
There were a number of the Jews who felt they were righteous. They were the ones who HE was actually speaking with in that particular passage. HE also said there is none that are righteous save GOD. HE definitely did NOT come to save GOD... We are all able to become Christians and be under HIS Saving Grace. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds

He said that to those who reckoned themselves righteous. Ofcourse no one is actually righteous, just as it is written, "There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins." Ec 7:20 There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins. What about yourself?

Righteous people don't need to be saved, since they haven't sinned and so are not lost.

James 2:25 (KJV) interior an same way, replaced into no longer even Rahab the PROSTITUTE seen RIGHTEOUS for what she did even as she gave accommodations to the spies and despatched them off in a distinct direction (Joshua 6). If mendacity or prostitution were a “sin”, then why is it that Rabah is so extraordinarily known in God's Holy word the Bible as a RIGHTEOUS PROSTITUTE AND A LIAR!!! It jogs my memory of the RIGHTEOUS LOT having sex at the same time with his 2 youthful virgin daughters till both one of them were given pregnant. he's recognized as a RIGHTEOUS guy via the Bible!!! Jesus Christ died on the cross to save everyone. Sinners in that term could be people who do not believe in him. Yes, we are all sinners and have fall short of the glory of God. Everyone does sin, but most believers ask forgiveness. An unbeliver goes around sinning and does not ask forgiveness, so God is seeking to get them to believe in him. God has came to save all of us.

The righteous are not people who do not sin.

he meant people who know the difference between right and wrong and try to avoid doing wrong things.

the sinners, are people who willfully chose to do wrong things instead of doing right.

Am not Christian but the concept here is very common sense.

Why would God bother sending a message to people who already know the gist of the message?

Remember, Jesus had previous prophets sent before him with the right message: do good and obey God and avoid doing wrong things.

No one is righteous. Since we are all sinners, we are saved by His Grace when we accept Him and repent.

Those who already have accepted him in to their hearts are the righteous and no better not to sin although they do it anyway they also know that Gods word says not to and when they accepted him in to their hearts they were forgiven all their sins and washed clean yes a sinner saved by Gods grace . A man who knows not sin and says he has not sinned is not saved or has not accepted Jesus Christ in to his or her heart those are the ones Jesus was talking about . If you have not accepted him in to your heart please get on your knees and pray to God and say god i am a sinner and want to know you and i believe you died on the cross and shed your blood for my sins and i want to be saved . does this mean that you will not sin anymore ? no but it does mean that you will know better . but if we sin he is faithful and just to forgive us all our sins and cover them with his blood .Jesus Christ loves us so much he gave us a choice to sin or not to sin but he won't take away the punishment for that sin just because you are a Christian . Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God . Forsake not your selves from assembling together wich means go to church and learn i suggest that you get with a local pastor and join a local bible believing church that preaches the word of the gospel and you will know what I am talking about
thank you
respectfully yours
Joe
