The camera is nothing more than a light-tight box with a place to mount a lens and a way of controlling how long a light-sensitive surface is exposed to light. Early cameras didn't have a shutter - after focusing, a "cap" was placed over the lens, a light-sensitive plate was inserted and its protective cover - called a "dark slide"- was removed and the cap was removed from the lens. The photographer then counted off the exposure, in seconds, and replaced the cap over the lens. Exposure time was judged by the photographer, based on his experience "reading" the light.

Cameras really don't "take pictures" - photographers do.

By recording light on a medium, be it film or ccd. There is a plethora of information concerning photography throughout the web. Trying to summarize it on yahoo answers is an exercise in futility. No one goes back to read previous questions or answers so the repetition of the same facts goes on forever.
