I love taking pictures but i limit the pictures i take in public b/c i feel very uncomfortable walking around in public with my camera. I'm not doing anything wrong/illegal when i take pictures in public but i still am very uncomforable. i think Its because i'm worried that the people around me will think i'm up to no good or out to cause trouble or just plain think i'm weird. How do i get over this fear and get out to take pictures?

You can start in more secluded places and then work up to busier locations.

In reality, most people either don't care what you are doing or you become some sort of entertainment for them.

Don't worry about what they are thinking, just worry about what the shot looks like and try to experiment with different angles and settings.

Keeping your concentration on what you are trying to accomplish means that you won't be concentrating on what other people are thinking about you.

Get over it! You are weird! Why would you want to take pictures of people you don't even know? Does that sound sane? What possible meaning would the photograph have for you? Random strangers on the street? Why would you want to remember them? You look like a terrorist laying out an attack strategy!
So now do you feel better? You photograph for yourself, don't worry about what other people think. If you dwell on it, you'll miss that one great shot...JUst get out there and do it. Immersion therapy is the only answer.

Pretend you're a tourist.
Pretend you're a real estate agent.
Pretend you're an art student with an assignment.
The way I get comfortable is to be completely open about what I'm doing - I walk down the street with my camera and if I need to stand in the road to take a picture of a tree I do it.
Sometimes people ask what I'm doing, two easy answers:
a) I need pictures for my portfolio.
b) They told me they needed a picture of this street.
I don't take pictures of people, which is a different comfort issue entirely.

that is a bit over the top with self-conciousness, i think...people don't really pay that much attention to me when i am out and about with my cameras, they really don't, they have their own lives and thoughts and issues and things they are doing...really.
and even if they are watching me, so what? they cannot take away my birthday, (and i have a good attorney if they try).

just zone out quick and just feel as if you and the target of your picture are the only things in existence. and you should get a perfect shot everytime. hope this helps, works for me.
