The mother stayed up all night worrying for her 40 year old son to come home and got really mad when she found out that he had spent the night sleeping with his girlfriend.
Is there something wrong with this picture?

Well, Yea, Why is a 40 year old man still living with his mother? If he is staying to help out his mom, then ok. If he is staying because he doesn't have money to be on his own, not cool. If you know he lives with mom, then the only polite thing to do is call and say don't wait up, I might not be home. If you can't handle the fact that mom is in the picture, and maybe you would have to live with her if you got married, then it's time to bail.

Well, what seems most wrong is the fact that she knows he is out in the first place (do they live together?).
If they don't live together, and there are no special circumstances that he require that she knows where he is/what he is doing, he needs to cut the apron strings.
If they do in fact share a household (and he is taking care of her, which is admirable, while not conducive for the next woman in his life), it might be a good idea for him to tell her that he won't be home = common courtesy.
If they do in fact share a household (and she is taking care of him), then he has much larger problems than just the fact that he has to report home...

Yes...that your 40 year old friend has to check in with his mother! If her lives with her, he should (out of respect) call if he's not coming home...and if he doesn't like that...MOVE OUT - YOU'RE 40!

If he is considered a room-mate ( paying half the bills, rent, groceries ect.) then it really is just out of courtesy that he should call her. However, if he isn't paying at least half the bills then he needs to live by her convictions/rules as long as she his footing the bills.

Maybe he had to cancel a plan with his mom. It depends on his face. Was he happy or not?
