Some ways of helping.
Watch subs anime-Turn the volume high and listen to what they're saying. With the translation popping up, copy them.
Buy a lot of books.
Listen to japanese audios

Sing Karaoke
Read japanese comic books
Buy japanese learning software. :) Hope that helps.
You should know some simple words and phrases too already such as

Being here in japan doesn't mean you can start to speak japanese. It's hard. i also feel dored then depressed because i am already 10 months here but i cannot make good conversation yet. What i realize is that you need to set goal for yourself. For 6 months i didn't study well, and now that i have my goal i have a motivation to study more. Set a goal. Take begginer japanese language exam (JLPT) after 6 months or one year. Begginer level is N5, then after a year take N4 then after a year take N3 till you reach N1. You might use that in your country. :-) You can use the book Minna no Nihongo english-japanese, focus on grammar. がんばって! :-)

I studied it for four years in college as a minor, then came to Japan. It was a huge shock to me at first that I couldn't communicate very well with my Japanese, but after a while, I made some Japanese friends and they helped me out a ton. The best lessons always started with beer!

Study hard, come to Japan, then make as many Japanese friends as you can!

hello - konnichiwa

goodbye - sayoonara (formal) or jya-na (casual)

no - iie

yes -hai, ee

rice -gohan

please - Kudasai , Onegashimasu

I'm learning Japanese now and it may be hard in the beginning. However, since you catch hold on the pronoucation and the wordings, the flow of learning will become easier.

I'm now learning how to translate foreign objects/name via Katakana - gives me a headache but it is fun. :)

I attach the 2 hyperlink for the all basic Hiragana and Katakana wordings. It come with romanji as well as sound pronouncation when you click on them. Pretty good for beginners.
