They are basically the same thing, however, a pharmacist is trained to give advice on drugs. And they get at least 4-6 times more pay than a tech.

It's sort of like the difference between a Family Doctor and a Medical Assistant. The pharmacist gives out drugs, looks for potential reactions, consults with physicians and helps patients understand their medicines. A pharmacy tech will do some customer service, and some preparation of prescriptions, but not actually doling out the drugs.

A pharm tech just can do the technical part of pharmacy. They cannot pass any clinical judgment. They can't counsel. A pharmacist can answer the whys There is a great gap in the amount of education of a pharmacist (minimum 6 years) and pharm tech (no formal education required).
